Women’s Basketball: Long Beach routs Palomar 72-27 in home opener

The Long Beach City College women's basketball team improved to 3-0 with an impressive 72-27 non-conference win over visiting Palomar College on Wednesday night at the LBCC Hall of Champions Gym.

Long Beach stormed out to a 6-0 lead after baskets by freshman guard Keshonda Moore, sophomore guard Kala Amico, and freshman center Toynell Williams. A free throw by freshman forward Kaaron King put LBCC up 14-0 before the Comets finally got on the board at the 13:55 mark when Solianna Faapouli hit a free throw.

Long Beach's pressure defense held Palomar to just two field goals and forced 20 turnovers in the first half. LBCC led 42-10 at halftime and was never threatened.

The Long Beach scoring was well distributed in the game as all 11 players that hit the court scored. Moore led LBCC with 15 points and three steals.

The second half was played mainly by LBCC reserves. Freshman Symphony Logan had 10 points while Charmaine Nelson totaled nine points and four rebounds. King had eight points and eight rebounds, while freshman Joanna Jaramillo led the Vikings with 10 rebounds to go with eight points and three steals.

For Palomar (0-4), Mariah Bennett led the Comets with 13 points and Ashley Witherspoon led all with 12 rebounds. The Comets shot just 17 percent for the game (8 for 47) and committed 35 turnovers.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Nov 18) when it travels to Los Angeles Valley College for a 5 pm non-conference game. LBCC is back home next Wednesday (Nov 23) to host Cypress College at 6 pm.
