Women’s Basketball: Long Beach cruises to 77-40 non-conference win at Oxnard

Double-doubles by sophomore Darshana Taafua (Western HS) and freshman Lupe Cruz (South East HS) helped lead the Long Beach City College women's basketball team to a 77-40 rout at Oxnard College on Saturday.

The non-conference win improved the Vikings to 4-2 overall this season. Long Beach is back in action on Thursday (Dec. 11) at 2 p.m. against Rio Hondo College to open the three-day Irvine Valley College tournament.

Taafua posted her second consecutive double-double, leading the Vikings with 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds while Cruz added 13 points with a team-best 15 boards. Sophomore Janissa Zagal (Kennedy HS) came off the bench to score nine points and freshman Kayla Sii (Lakewood HS) added six points.

Long Beach led 44-26 at halftime before allowing just 14 points in the second. The Viking defense forced 40 turnovers and held Oxnard (0-5) to 14 of 49 field goal shooting for the contest.

LBCC is currently ranked No. 13 in Southern California in the December 8 California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association regional poll.
