Women’s Basketball: Vikings open SCC South schedule with 108-43 rout of L.A. Southwest

Long Beach City College got offensive, scoring a season-high 108 points in a 108-43 rout of Los Angeles Southwest College in both teams’ South Coast Conference South Division opener on Wednesday night at the Hall of Champions Gym. With the victory, Long Beach improved to 16-4 overall and 1-0 in SCC South play.

Long Beach City College got offensive, scoring a season-high 108 points in a 108-43 rout of Los Angeles Southwest College in both teams' South Coast Conference South Division opener on Wednesday night at the Hall of Champions Gym. With the victory, Long Beach improved to 16-4 overall and 1-0 in SCC South play.

LBCC jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the contest. Sophomore Lupe Cruz (South East HS) had eight of the Vikings' first 14 points to give Long Beach a 14-3 advantage at the 4:39 mark in the first. The Vikings were up 25-7 after the opening quarter and held a commanding 51-20 lead at halftime.

Long Beach blew the game open in the third, outscoring L.A. Southwest 30-7.

On the night, LBCC made 47 of 93 field goal attempts. L.A. Southwest had 41 turnovers as the Vikings totaled 22 steals.

Sophomore Christiana Layne (Lynwood HS) was one of just three Vikings to score in double figures. She led LBCC with 14 points while sophomore Imani Johnson (Carson HS) had 12 points and freshman Vivian Hernandez (Warren HS) chipped in with 10 points. All 15 Vikings that hit the court scored in the contest.

LBCC returns to action on Friday (Jan. 22) when the Vikings travel to Los Angeles Trade-Tech College for a 5 p.m. SCC South Division game.
