It was recently announced by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) that five members of the Long Beach City College women's basketball team earned South Coast Conference (SCC) – South All-Conference recognition at the conclusion of the 2016-17 campaign. Sophomore center Miranda Martinez (Placentia, CA), sophomore forward Ayerjenne Jeanmard (Long Beach, CA), and freshman guard Janay Wellington (S.D. Paradise Hills, CA) earned First-Team honors, while sophomore Vivian Hernandez (Downey, CA) and freshman guard Tiana Augustus (Long Beach, CA) hauled in Second-Team accolades.
Martinez earns her second-consecutive all-conference nod after being a staple for the Vikings in numerous aspects of her two-year career. While starting in 29 games, the sophomore leader 11.9 points-per-game and has scored in double-digits 18 times. Her scoring average ranks her eighth in the SCC-South. Additionally, she has crashed the boards for an average of 8.8 rebounds-per-game which places her second-overall in the SCC-South.
Jeanmard earns her first-career all-conference nod in her final season for the Vikings by acting as a dynamic scorer and overall basketball-savvy athlete. Despite missing a handful of conference competitions, the sophomore veteran helped the Vikings rattle off the final five conference victories to secure a Co-Conference Championship. Jeanmard recorded the team's lone triple-double in a victory over Cerritos College where she netted 12 points, hauled in 12 boards, and dished out 10 assists. Jeanmard ranks fifth in rebounds-per-game (8) and sixth in points-per-game (13).
Wellington reels in all-conference recognition in her first season with the Vikings after manning the offense at the point guard position for the entire season. Wellington's talents were spread equally as she was a solid rebounder, excellent playmaker, and could score when willing. Defensive was a strong suit as she recorded a steal in all but three game. She pocketed a season-high eight steals in a one-point win over Cerritos. Additionally, Wellington netted the game-winning free throw in a eight point, 13 rebound effort.
Hernandez captures all-conference honors in her final year for Long Beach by acting as one of the most efficient three-pointer shooters in the SCC-South. The distance shooter has earned a 34% shooting average from downtown which ranks second overall in the SCC-South. She has drained an even 80 three pointers with 32 of them coming in conference action. She tallied a season-high 24 points in the season opener against San Bernardino. She went on to total 13 double-digit scoring games through the regular season.
Augustus rounds out the all-conference honorees by receiving accolades in her first season as a Viking. Augustus was a reliable scoring option flushing double-digit point totals in 14 games in the regular season. She scored a season high 17 points twice in games against the Mt. San Antonio Mounties and the L.A. Harbor Seahawks. She ranks 13th in points-per-game (9.6) in the SCC-South.
The Vikings earned their second-consecutive conference title and sixth overall in program history. They will begin a chase for a state title by hosting Antelope Valley College in the CCCAA Round One Regional Playoffs on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7 p.m.
