Women’s Basketball Fall to Huskies in Home Opener

The No. 14 women's basketball team lost to the No. 11 East Los Angeles Huskies on Wednesday evening 69-58 in their home opener of the 2017-18 campaign. The Vikings had the lead early on in the first quarter, but the Huskies gained momentum as the game gained some speed. Despite the loss, the Vikings outshot the Huskies in field goals and free throws.

In the first quarter, sophomore guards Doylebonet Walker and Janay Wellington led the team with three points each. Walker made her first three pointer of the game and also acquired two rebounds.

The Vikings followed close behind in the second quarter with sophomore point Shakiyah Maiden and sophomore guard Kendria Rendon both making jumpers off the bench. The Huskies followed up with a three pointer to keep the lead within an arm's reach from the Vikings.

Sophomore point Brittnay McDaniel made her presence known in the third quarter with scoring five points and having two rebounds. Freshman point Imani Edmond was right behind her with four points, one rebound and one steal.

In the fourth and final quarter, the Vikings continued to put up a fight by making all free throws and acquiring three steals.

Overall, Walker led the team with 12 points and McDaniel was the untouchable at the rim with six rebounds. Rendon had the most steals on the team and sophomore guard Esther Franks was the catalyst behind each hoop with four assists.

The Vikings will play again on Friday, Jan. 12 against Pasadena College at El Camino at 3 p.m.
