Women’s Soccer: Streak snapped as Vikings fall 3-0 to Cerritos

A three-goal second-half doomed the Long Beach City College women's soccer team as the Vikings lost 3-0 to rival Cerritos College in a South Coast Conference game on Tuesday at LBCC.

The loss snapped the Vikings' eight-game unbeaten streak and dropped them out of first place in the SCC standings. Long Beach is now 8-2-1 and 4-1 in conference play as it heads into a home conference game against El Camino College-Compton Center on Friday (Oct 18) at 2 p.m.

Cerritos entered Tuesday's game ranked No. 1 in California as well as No. 1 in the national NSCAA soccer ratings but it was the Vikings that controlled the tempo in the first half.

Both teams couldn't convert on their limited first-half scoring chances. Cerritos' April Juarez had her open-net shot blocked by LBCC defender Rylee Anderson (Lakewood HS) in the 10th minute while a volley-shot by Anderson in the 19th minute and a header by Noemi Vasquez (Wilson HS) in the 23rd minute on LBCC corner kicks sailed just wide.

The Vikings outshot Cerritos 8-5 in the first half, but the second half was a completely difference story. The Falcons used their speed to cruise by the Vikings defense and in an 11-minute span jumped ahead 3-0.

Nayeli Requejo headed in a pair of goals in the 52nd and 63rd minutes and Carolina Ornelas squeezed in her goal in the 60th to propel Cerritos to the win. Cerritos went on to outshoot Long Beach 10-2 in the deciding second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Karen Nuno (Bellflower HS) posted three saves for LBCC in the loss while Cerritos' Alexis Carrillo had five saves in the shutout.

Unbeaten Cerritos improved to 11-0 and 5-0 in the SCC with the win.
