Sophomore Joanna Perone (San Pedro HS) provided the offense while sophomore goalkeepers Evelyn Fierros (Bishop Amat HS) and Isabella Reynoso (Lakewood HS) combined to shutout visiting Taft College in a 1-0 Long Beach City College non-conference win on Tuesday. The victory improved the Vikings to 3-1 overall.

Fierros and Reynoso posted their second consecutive shutout while Perone picked the perfect time to score her first goal of the season.

Playing in the extreme heat, the two squads were scoreless after the first half. But Perone finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute. She dribbled deep into the Taft penalty area and bent her shot from near the right goal line over Taft goalkeeper Alexandra Benevidez for the impressive score.

The Viking defense played tough the remainder of the game to make the lone goal stand. Fierros posted a near point-blank save early in the contest but neither her or Reynoso were tested much the rest of the game.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Sept. 11) at 1 p.m. when it hosts Mt. San Jacinto College in a non-conference game.
