The Long Beach City College women's soccer team kicked off its 2016 campaign at home on Tuesday evening against the San Diego City College Knights on the Viking Soccer Field. Long Beach lit up the pitch and relentlessly pressed down on the offensive gas pedal by firing off a monstrous 36 shots en route to six goals, thus shutting out the Knights and winning by the final score of 6-0.

Freshman forward Julianna Carrillo (Long Beach, CA) wasted no time on the offensive end by netting the opening score of the game in the sixth minute off a rhythmic assist from sophomore forward Savannah Christensen (Lakewood, CA). Christensen dished out another assist minutes later to sophomore midfielder Stephanie Barrera (Bellflower, CA).

Carrillo continued the scoring action in the 24th minute by lofting a shot over the San Diego goalkeeper, dropping between the posts. Sophomore midfielder Miranda Kaekul (North Hollywood, CA) capped off the first-half scoring by firing home a goal in the 27th minute.

Long Beach was not satisfied with a four-goal lead and continued to pour on the offense, as Carrillo notched yet another score to equal a hat trick for the contest. The Vikings finished their scoring efforts in the 74th minute, as sophomore defender Katin Trowbridge (Long Beach, CA) recorded an assist off a corner kick by locating the head of freshman midfielder Casey Angers (Seal Beach, CA) who promptly burried the score leading to the 6-0 rout.

Carrillo led the way with 12 shot attempts and three goals, while Barrera unleashed eight shots leading to a goal.

A backline consisting of sophomore defender Terica Johnson (Lakewood, CA), freshman defender Jocelyn Gonzalez (Paramount, CA), sophomore defender Erica Rojas (Long Beach, CA), and Trowbridge held the Knights to a mere two shots on goals throughout the entire contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Ronnie Gonzalez (Lakewood, CA) recorded the win after recording one save. Freshman goalkeeper Isabel Lozano (Long Beach, CA) recorded just under 22 minutes of action between the posts and had one save.

Head Coach Sean Reeves was happy with the outcome and is thrilled about what the remainder of the season can bring.

"We did not let our foot off the gas pedal by any means," explained Reeves. "Our goal is to beat teams with skill, pace, and power while mirroring our performance today."

The Vikings (1-0-0) will continue play on Saturday, September 1 against Sierra in the Nike Community College Showcase at 5 p.m.
