A game embodying punctual offense, strong defense, and a goal off the foot of sophomore forward Savannah Christensen (Lakewood, CA) lead the Long Beach City College women's soccer squad to a 1-0 victory over Sierra College on Thursday evening in the Nike Soccer Community College Showcase. The victory pushed the Viking's record to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Barrera (Bellflower, CA) assisted the score in the 70th minute by threading the needle on a pass to Christensen after she broke through a Sierra backline that gave Long Beach fits in the early goes.

Head Coach Sean Reeves described the goal as a "moment of brilliance" that lead to the win.

To go along with the clutch offense, the defense was a mainstay throughout the 90 minutes of action. A strong defensive brigade consisting of sophomore defender Terica Johnson (Lakewood, CA), freshman defender Jocelyn Gonzalez (Paramount, CA), and sophomore defender Katin Trowbridge (Long Beach, CA) halted Sierra to just seven shots in the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Ronnie Gonzalez (Lakewood, CA) earned her second-consecutive victory between the posts to remain undefeated on the season.

"This was a really hard-fought match," said Reeves. "Sierra pushed us to the limit and our team responded brilliantly."

The Vikings (2-0-0) will look to keep their hot streak alive as they finished out Nike Soccer Community College Showcase action by facing off against West Valley on Saturday, September 3 at 11 a.m.
