Women’s Tennis: Parent, Herrera advance to Southern California Regionals

Long Beach City College freshmen Sarah Parent (Wilson HS, pictured right) and Ellisse Herrera (Lakewood HS, pictured left) have both qualified for the 2012 Southern California Regional Championships after advancing to the quarterfinals of the South Coast Conference Championship at Cerritos College on Friday.

In singles, Parent earned a default win over Cerritos' Amy Peterson in the opening round and then moved on with a victory over Cerritos' Hui You Sohn in a second-round match.

Freshman Chloe Angulo (Downey HS) nearly joined Parent. She picked up a default win over Cerritos' Nancy Audetat, but suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Mt. San Antonio's Jourdan Jefferson in Round 2.

In other first-round singles matches, El Camino's Kelly Ng defeated LBCC's Ana Casillas (South East HS) 6-3, 6-0; Patricia Escalante fell to Cerritos' Dominique Luna 7-6 (5), 1-6, 10-3; Herrera lost to Mt. SAC's Kassandra Heacock 6-2, 6-0; and Jalesia Duran (Lakewood HS) fell to El Camino's Ashley Guerrero 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles, Parent and Herrera received a first-round bye that automatically advanced them to the SCC Round of 8 and a spot in the SoCal Regionals.

In other doubles matches, Escalante and Angulo fell to El Camino's Fiat Tapeneeyakorn and Jessica Castile 6-2, 7-6 (4). Also, the duo of Christine Rojas (Bellflower HS) and Duran dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Cerritos' Kim Diaz and Sohn.

Play was halted following the quarterfinal round. All players advancing to the quarterfinals at the SCC finals automatically move on to the Southern California Regional Championships on May 3-5 in Palm Springs.
