It was a great opening day for Long Beach City College's Nikki Tigas (Wilson HS) and Judith Aguilar (Poly HS) at the California Community College Athletic Association Tennis State Championship at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. Tigas was a winner in her opening-round singles match while the duo was also victorious in their first-round doubles contest.

Tigas defeated North No. 11-seed Claudia Plascencia Astudillo of American River College by scores of 7-5, 6-3 to move on to the next round. She will face South No. 6-seed Hali Dickson of Orange Coast College on Friday.

In doubles, Tigas and Aguilar rallied from an opening-set loss to defeat Pauline Asuncion and Deanne Dinio of Diablo Valley College 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 on Thursday. But the Viking duo saw their season come to an end with a 6-1, 7-6 loss to the South No. 6-seeded team of Teresa de Anda and Bettina Olah from Palomar College in the second round.
