The Long Beach City College doubles team of sophomore Jasmine Hyacinth (Mayfair HS) and freshman Maria Gonzalez (Norwalk HS) pulled off a 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 upset win over the No. 12-seeded duo of Sally Finney and Coral Imhoff of Santa Rosa Junior College on Thursday in a second-round match of the 2016 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Tennis State Championship.
But their season came to an end on Friday as Hyacinth and Gonzalez suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss in a third-round match against the fifth-seeded Irvine Valley College team of Sarah Garcia and Samantha Schwarz.
Hyacinth and Gonzalez are the second consecutive LBCC doubles team to earn a win at the state championships. Last year, the duo of Nikki Tigas and Judith Aguilar picked up an opening-round win at the tourney.
The Vikings are led by second-year head coach Renzo Maggi.
