Women’s Volleyball: Vikings fall 3-1 to Golden West in season opener

Sophomore outside hitter Vashti Nettles (Poly HS) posted 12 kills and two blocks but it wasn't enough as the Long Beach City College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to visiting Golden West College in both teams' season opener on Wednesday at LBCC.

The Vikings lost the match by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22 to fall to 0-1 this season.

The contest nearly went to five sets as the Vikings held a 22-19 lead late in the fourth. But Golden West rallied with six straight points to erase the deficit and close out the victory.

Sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Caldwell (Lakewood HS) added six kills while freshman middle blocker  Bra'Shawanda Byrd (Poly HS) led LBCC with four blocks to go with five kills. Sophomore setter Melissa Yepez (Paramount HS) posted 27 assists and added 11 digs.

Golden West (1-0) got a big opening day from Jordyn Sanchez as she led all with 21 kills.

"We just made too many errors," said eight-year LBCC head coach Suzie Witmer. "Hopefully now that we got our first match out of the way, we can move on."

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Sep 6) when it hosts San Diego Mesa College at 12 pm and Chaffey College at 3 pm in non-conference matches.
