Women’s Volleyball: Nettles’ 17 kills leads LBCC to sweep of LA Trade-Tech

Sophomore Vashti Nettles (Poly HS) totaled a match-high 17 kills to help lead the Long Beach City College women's volleyball team to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-8 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Friday at LBCC.

It was the Vikings second straight sweep and third consecutive win as they improved to 10-12 overall and 7-6 in conference play with just one match left to play on Wednesday (Nov 20) at home against East Los Angeles College at 6 p.m.

On Friday, LBCC overpowered an inexperienced LA Trade-Tech squad. Nettles had her way at the net, hitting an impressive .654 for the match with 17 kills and no errors on 26 attempts. She also added three blocks (2 solo).

In the sweep-clinching third set, the Vikings opened with 11 straight points behind the serving of sophomore Melissa Yepez (Paramount HS). The Vikings were up 19-2 before Trade-Tech rallied for the next four points. Leading 21-8, LBCC closed out the win with the final four points, including a block by sophomores Michaelah Brown (Paramount HS) and Andrea Morales (Los Alamitos HS) on match-point.

As a team, Long Beach had a .422 hitting percentage for the match. Morales had six kills to go with a match-high four aces and five digs. Freshman Brianna Ritzius (St. Anthony HS) led LBCC with 13 digs while Yepez totaled 33 assists, seven digs, three kills, and three aces.

Trade-Tech (2-13, 1-12 SCC) was led by Evelyn Ventura's five kills while Jennifer Arana had eight digs and six assists.
