Freshman Chanel Brown totaled a match-high 17 kills to help lead Long Beach City College to a 25-14, 25-14, 27-25 win over visiting Los Angeles Trade-Tech College in both teams' South Coast Conference opener on Friday night.

With the win, Long Beach improved to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

After cruising to wins in the opening sets, the Vikings had to rally from behind in the third to complete the sweep.

LBCC led 14-12 before L.A. Trade-Tech's Mary Velis served up five straight aces to put the Beavers out in front 17-14. But consecuitve kills by freshman Helen Maragos and an ace by freshman Selesitina Felise tied up the set.

But more errors by Long Beach gave Trade-Tech back the lead at 21-18 before the Beavers had set point at 24-23. The Vikings responded by winning four of the final five points. Freshman Alexia Duarte's kill put LBCC ahead and sophomore Bra'shawnda Byrd's kill sealed the victory.

Byrd added 12 kills while Maragos chipped in with five blocks.

Long Beach returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 8) when it travels to Mt. San Antonio College for a conference match.
