In the midst of playoffs and the regular season creeping to a close, the South Coast Conference (SCC) women's volleyball regular season champion will be decided Wednesday, November 16th in a game that features the No. 23 Long Beach City College Vikings playing host to the No. 9 El Camino College Warriors. The game will honor the Viking sophomores and the historic careers of players and legendary coaches.
The contest will feature numerous events that will be tied into the excitement of the match that include games, raffles, food, giveaways, and much more.
The game's location has been shifted to the Hall of Champions located on campus. A campus map can be seen here for directional purposes. For those fans who are unable to attend, the game will be live streamed through LBCC Viking Athletics on YouTube.
The cost of admission is $5 per person. Students that show a valid LBCC student ID or show a one-of-a-kind match ticket that was given to you by an LBCC student or player will be granted free access. Upon admittance, the first 100 fans will receive a "We Are LB" rally towel.
Prior to the match, there will be a tailgate event sponsored by Legends Bar & Grill. The first 100 people that show up will receive free food and beverages. The tailgate will begin at 5 p.m., therefore fans are encouraged to attend promptly.
After the first set of the match, there will be a raffle that offers numerous prizes such as $50 gift cards to Legends Bar & Grill, LBCC Athletics apparel, and a signed volleyball by the Vikings' team and coaching staff. Each fan will receive one free ticket upon entrance. You will have the opportunity to purchase more tickets at $2 per ticket to increase your chances of winning.
Following the second set, there will be a serving contest hosted by LBCC Student Affairs. The winner of the serving contest will receive a special opportunity with the women's volleyball team. In order to be eligible to participate, you must fill out a ticket with a teammate and place the ticket in our drawing bucket. The rules of the contest will be explained prior to the competition.
All departments are encouraged to attend the event and show their #VikingPride by wearing red. Additionally, the most attended LBCC department will win a one-hour session with Head Coach Misty May-Treanor.
Furthermore, the legendary coaching career of El Camino's Le Valley Pattison will be coming to a close as she has announced her retirement after 24 years at the helm of the Warriors' program. She is a staple in the volleyball community by being part of the 400 win club and being named SCC Coach of the Year 12 times.
After experiencing a subpar season in 2015, Head Coach Misty May-Treanor and the women's volleyball coaching staff has worked to reshape the program in 2016 that has produced an overall record of 18-3 that boasts a 6-1 conference mark.
Leading the charge for the Vikings is sophomore outside Sarah Miller (Long Beach, CA). Miller, who was named the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Female Athlete of the Month in October, is feared around the SCC with her tenacious ability to rack up kills with ease while incorporating solid defense. The sophomore sensation is three kills shy of 300 while averaging 4.87 kills-per-set to equal a .359 kill percentage. Additionally, she has recorded 215 digs with a 3.52 digs-per-set mark. Miller's numbers pace the SCC in kills, kills-per-set, hitting percentage, and digs-per-se. She ranks fourth in digs as well.
Following right behind her is sophomore outside Jessica Kaeka (Long Beach, CA). Kaeka has been as reliable as they come by earning a total kill mark of 182 to equal a 2.76 kills-per-set mark and a .304 hitting percentage. She has been a mainstay in the defensive efforts by boasting a total of 210 digs that equals a 3.18 digs-per-set mark. Kaeka ranks in the top-five in a handful of categories in the SCC that include fourth in kills-per-set, fifth in total kills, third in hitting percentage, third in digs-per-set, and fifth in digs.
Freshman setter Mary McBride (Paradise Valley, AZ) acts as the grease that keeps the offensive engine running smooth by acting as the main facilitator. Throughout the season, McBride has totaled double-digit assists in every game she has played to earn an overall mark of 750 assists. McBride has recorded 50+ assists three times on the season while earning an average of 10.71 assists-per-set to rank first in the SCC. The second-best assist-per-set mark is a full set below McBride's output.
Other notables include sophomore outside Breana Torres (Long Beach, CA) who ranks fifth in the SCC in hitting percentage (.241). She has tallied 159 kills which is third on the squad. Freshman libero Jordan Diaz (La Habra, CA) acts as a spark plug on the defensive end while pacing the team with 216 digs and 18 service aces. Her digs total puts her at third overall in the SCC.
The Warriors are on a 43-game conference winning streak while being placed first in the SCC with a 7-0 conference record and an overall record of 19-3.
El Camino looks to Taylor Brydon to lead the way on offense as she paces the Warriors in kills with 254 and kills-per-set with 3.48. Brydon is riding the heels of Miller in all offensive statistical categories as she ranks second in the SCC in kills-per-set, kills, and hitting percentage.
