Volleyball Upsets No.11 Cypress College in Five Sets

The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team upset No.11 Cypress College Chargers on Friday evening in the Building Q Gym. With the nail-biting win, the Vikings advance to 5-5.

Long Beach opened the game by taking the first set 25-23. Cypress came back in the second set with the 25-20 win over the Vikings and then slammed in the third set 25-8. The Vikings rallied in the fourth to come back on top 25-16. Then the Vikings battled hard for the fifth and final set as they won 16-14 to squeak the 3-2 win away from the Chargers.

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Earkman led the team with 18 kills, two service aces, nine digs and had two block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Anisa Lopez was also an asset to the Vikings as she held 14 kills and 12 digs. Freshman setter Jillian Petnicki was constantly on her toes as she had 25 assists for the Vikings along with two service aces.

The Vikings will return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in their first South Coast Conference game of the season at home against Mt. San Antonio College at 6 p.m.
