Women's Water Polo: LBCC goes 3-0 to open season at Cypress tournament

The Long Beach City College women's water polo team opened its season by going undefeated over the weekend at the two-day Cypress College tournament. On Friday, the Vikings cruised to a 20-2 win over Santa Ana College and closed out the day with a 13-4 victory over host Cypress. LBCC then came back on Saturday to edge perennial Northern California power Sierra College of Rocklin by a final score of 8-5.

With just 12 players on its roster, the Vikings got a balanced team effort over the weekend, which was evident by having a different scoring leader in each game.

Sophomore attacker Jessica Diaz (Esperanza HS, pictured) had seven goal in the rout of Santa Ana, freshman attacker McKayla Thomas (Millikan HS) had a team-high four goals against Cypress, and sophomore utility Ranya El-Tawil (Wilson HS) scored four goals in the win over Sierra.

Long Beach returns to action on September 18 at 3 p.m. when the Vikings travel to Chaffey College to open the South Coast Conference schedule.
