Women's Water Polo: No. 9 Long Beach cruises to 13-4 rout at Cerritos

Freshman McKayla Thomas (Millikan HS) scored a game-high five goals and freshman Kendall Johnson (Poly HS) posted 16 saves to lead the No. 9 state-ranked Long Beach City College women's water polo team to a 13-4 South Coast Conference win at Cerritos College on Wednesday.

With the win, the Vikings improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the SCC.

Long Beach jumped out to a 4-0 first-quarter lead and was never really challenged. Thomas scored three of her goals in the first half to give the Vikings an 8-2 advantage at halftime.

LBCC took over in the second half outscoring Cerritos by a 5-2 margin. Johnson and the Vikings' defense held the Falcons scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Ranya El-Tawil (Wilson HS) added three goals for the Vikings while sophomores Taylor Faust (Paramount HS) and Jessica Diaz (Esperanza HS) both scored twice.

Catherine Borunda had eight saves in goal for Cerritos (4-7, 1-2 SCC) while four different Falcons scored.

Long Beach returns to action this weekend (Oct 4-5) at the two-day Cuesta College Rabobank Invitational tournament.
