No. 5 Vikings Surpass Cerritos in Conference Game

The women's water polo team defeated the Cerritos College Falcons 9-7 in their 7th conference game on Wednesday afternoon at the Viking Aquatics Complex. The Falcons took the lead early on, but the Viking came back in the second quarter to regain the lead and ultimately take the win. Long Beach women's water polo is currently undefeated in conference. 

Cerritos was the first to score in the game, but then freshman attacker Charity Lopes quickly tied the game 1-1. By the end of the quarter, the Falcons took back the lead 2-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Bennett kicked off the second quarter with a shutout and refused to let any goals land in the cage. Sophomore defender Charli Chavarria scored two goals from point, while sophomore center Victoria Johnson knocked one in from the outside to command the lead 4-2.

Freshman attacker Harlie Whelan and freshman defender Stephany Velazquez scored three goals in the third and the LBCC defense held the Falcons to only two goals.

In the final quarter, Velazquez scored one more goal, while Nicole Adams scored her first goal to finalize the game with their seventh-straight conference win.

Long Beach City College women's water polo will play again on Friday, Oct. 20 in the Battle of the Beach Tournament against Cuesta College at 11:30 a.m. at Cypress College.
