Cross Country Takes First Place in the Coach Downey Classic

The men's and women's cross country teams competed over the weekend in the Coach Downey Cross Country Classic at Morley Field in San Diego. The men's cross country team took home the first place win, while the women's team placed second in the race.

Sophomore Donovan Zavala placed first for the Vikings with a time of 21:59. This is Zavala's second first place finish this season, as he also won gold in the Tour de Cuesta. Freshman Jonathan Ruiz took home fourth in the race with a 22:25 time and sophomore Brian Espinoza rounded out the top ten for the Vikings in ninth place with a 23:10 time.

Freshman Amaya Ferris placed the highest on the women's team in fourth with a 21:02 time. Sophomore Dasani Zavala was next up in sixth place to with a 21:08 and freshman Vanessa Washington finished in eleventh place with a time of 22:03.

The cross country teams will compete again on Friday, Oct. 11 at the Brubaker Invitational at Irvine Regional Park.
