The Long Beach City College football team traveled to No. 1 Riverside City College on Saturday Sept. 28. The Vikings nearly upset the No.1 team in the state, but fell in the final 25 seconds of the game and lost 31-28.
The Tigers opened the game with two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Vikings answered back with a 14 yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Zion Bowens to put the Vikings on the board.
Riverside then hit a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter, but Bowens was back in action with a 36-yard touchdown to star closing in on the Tigers 14-17. In the third quarter, Bowens caught another one in the air for 37-yards to lead the Tigers 21-17.
Freshman wide receiver Julian Woodard scored the final Vikings' touchdown with a 35-yard pass from freshman quarterback Derrach West to extend the Vikings' lead over the No.1 team 28-17.
The Tigers came back in the fourth quarter with a touchdown in the 14 minute to start closing the gap on the Vikings. In the final thirty seconds of the game, the Tigers scored another touchdown and won the game over the Vikings 31-28.
Despite the devastating loss, the Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5 to host Cerritos in their Homecoming and Crosstown Cup Rivalry Game.
There will be tailgating starting at 4 p.m. in the Veterans' Memorial Stadium parking lot with food trucks, games, and live music. Students and alumni will receive free food coupons to be used at the food trucks.

Women's Soccer- Veloz Scores Solo Goal Against the No. 16 Hornets
The Long Beach City College women's soccer team fell to the No. 16 Fullerton College Hornets on Tuesday afternoon 2-1 at the Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 4-2 overall.
Freshman goalkeeper Almareli Quintero was a force in the cage as she had seven saves against the Hornets.
The Vikings kicked-off the game with a goal from freshman forward Allison Rose Veloz with the cross pass from freshman forward Nathaly Silva to lead the Vikings 1-0. The Vikings fought hard against Fullerton as both teams competed fearlessly in the heat to edgge each other out.
Then the Hornets responded with a goal in the 24th minute to tie the game 1-1. Freshman defender Emily Barham and the backline worked tirelessly to keep the Hornets out of the box, but Fullerton scored a a goal from a penalty kick in the second half to finish the game with the 2-1 win over Long Beach.
On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Norco College and won 3-0. Veloz tallied two goals and sophomore forward Brittany Caudillo scored one goal. The Vikings will return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Cerritos College at 4 p.m. To view the rest of the schedule, click here.
Men's Soccer
The Long Beach City College men's soccer team tied Cuyamaca College on Friday, Sept. 27 2-2.
Sophomore Alexander Moreno scored the first goal for the Vikings with the assists from freshman midfielder Dean Robertson. Then Robertson scored the Vikings' second goal with the assist from freshman forward Gustavo Cervantes.
Cuyamaca College then scored two goals in the second half to end the game with a 2-2 tie. The men's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at LA Mission College at 6 p.m. To see the remainder of the men's soccer schedule, click here.
Women's Volleyball- Volleyball Sweeps Mt.SAC in Conference Play
The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team brought out the brooms on Wednesday evening and swept the Mount San Antonio College Mounties 3-0. With their first South Coast Conference win, the Vikings advance to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
The Vikings put their mark on the Mounties by immediately taking control in the first set. Sophomore outside hitter Anisa Lopez was on fire as she nailed 10 kills for the Vikings and smashed three service aces.
Freshman setter Jillian Petnicki was the catalyst behind the ball as she held 22 assists for Long Beach and had one service ace to help advance the Vikings over the Mounties and freshman defensive specialist Celestial Ropati was an asset as she totaled 10 digs to help propel the Vikings to victory.
The Long Beach City College women's volleyball team then went on to defeat Rio Hondo College 3-1 on Friday evening. With the wins, the Vikings are 7-5 overall and undefeated in the South Coast Conference with a 2-0 record.

Women's Water Polo
The Long Beach City College women's water polo team participated in the Mt. SAC/ Fullerton Tournament over the weekend.
On the first day of the tournament, the Vikings defeated West Valley 9-8, but then suffered their first loss of the season to Santa Barbara City College 13-1. Then on the second day, the Vikings defeated Santa Monica College 13-5 and the Phillipines women's national team 14-10.
Sophomore attacker Jillian Schultz leads the team with 35 goals, 10 assists, and 25 steals. Following behind Schultz is sophomore attacker Sydney Brightenburg with 24 goals and eight steals.

Men's Water Polo
The men's water polo team remains undefeated as they took down Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, America River College, Golden West College and Cuesta College in the 41st Cuesta Invitational Tournament. With the four wins, the Vikings are now 13-0.
In the first game of the tournament, the Vikings took down Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 20-6. Then in the second game, the Vikings defeated America River College 20-6.
On the second day of the tournament, the Vikings had a bit more of a challenge against Golden West College, but still came out on top 10-9. Freshman attacker Jose Loubriel scored three goals against the Rustlers, while sophomore attacker Vedran Latkovic and freshman center Jose Barakas scored two goals each.

Cross Country- Cross Country Takes First Place in the Coach Downey Classic
The men's and women's cross country teams competed over the weekend in the Coach Downey Cross Country Classic at Morley Field in San Diego. The men's cross country team took home the first place win, while the women's team placed second in the race.
Sophomore Donovan Zavala placed first for the Vikings with a time of 21:59. This is Zavala's second first place finish this season, as he also won gold in the Tour de Cuesta. Freshman Jonathan Ruiz took home fourth in the race with a 22:25 time and sophomore Brian Espinoza rounded out the top ten for the Vikings in ninth place with a 23:10 time.
Freshman Amaya Ferris placed the highest on the women's team in fourth with a 21:02 time. Sophomore Dasani Zavala was next up in sixth place to with a 21:08 and freshman Vanessa Washington finished in eleventh place with a time of 22:03.
