Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 9/12/2022: Women’s Soccer Undefeated, Cross-Country’s Rios Wins Second-Consecutive Race

Cross Country

The cross-country teams participated in the Fresno Invitational over the weekend and sophomore Ailene Rios was first across the line in the women's 3.1-mile race with a time 19:18.3. This is Rios' second consecutive first place finish, as she also took first in the San Diego XC Kickoff last weekend.

The women's team took 6th place as whole with 161 points. Next up for the Vikings, was freshman Natalie Mejia in the top 20 with a time of 21:40.3.

The men's team placed 11th with 260 points in the four-mile run. Freshman Riki Moscoso led the Vikings with a 22:30.4 overall time and averaged 5:37.6 per mile, while freshman Noah Macias came behind him with a 23:52.0 overall time.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will be running again on Friday, Sept. 23 at the SoCal Regional Preview at Kern Count Soccer Park in Bakersfield.

Men's Soccer

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team traveled to Cypress College last Tuesday and brought home a 2-1 win. Jesus Moreno and David Ortiz both scored one on the Chargers to seal the away victory. 

On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Golden West College where they tied the Rustlers 2-2.

The Vikings will return to the field on  Tuesday, Sept 13 against Antelope Valley at 4 p.m.

Women's Soccer- Vikings Blow Past Miramar 8-0

The Vikings women's soccer team dominated the Miramar College Jets with an 8-0 win on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings advance to 4-0 overall.

Forward Diana Leon was the standout on the field as she scored four goals against the Jets. Forward Genesis Lopez slammed in two goals, while forward Evelyn Sandoval and midfielder Aimee McSparren each tallied one to the scoreboard. Sandoval and midfielder Alyssa Rivas also both rung up two assists each to propel the Vikings over the Jets.

With the win, the Vikings hold an undefeated 4-0 overall record. The Long Beach City College soccer team will return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 13 against Mt. San Jacinto College at 2 p.m.

Football

The Long Beach City College Football team traveled to Riverside City College on Saturday and fell to the Tigers 48-20. With the loss, the Vikings hold a 1-1 overall record.

Riverside came out strong by scoring a 33-yard field goal to put themselves on the board. The Vikings answered back with a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell to wide reciever Kyle Miller to take the lead 7-3.

Then the Tigers scored three touchdowns to take back the lead 24-7. Kicker Mario De la Torre slammed in two field goals in the second quarter to close in on the Tigers, but were still down 31-13 at halftime.

Riverside kept putting their offense forward in the third and fourth quarters and finished the game by taking down the Vikings 48-20.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 17th against Chaffey College at Veteran's Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m.

Men's Water Polo

The Vikings men's water polo team played in the 2022 Nyquist Invitational over the weekend at West Valley College. The Vikings fell to West Valley College, but then bounced back to take down Diablo Valley, Las Positas and San Joaquin Delta.

Sophomore defender Nicolas Fedotov led the Vikings with eight goals, four assists and had ten steals to start the season. Freshman attacker Michael Minera also performed over the weeked with tallying seven goals and six assists.

The men's water polo team will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 18 at CSU Long Beach at 4:30 p.m.

Women's Water Polo

Over the weekend, the Vikings competed in the Orange Coast College Tournament. The Vikings opened the tournament with a 16-8 win over Sierra, but then fell to Orange Coast 8-9.

On day two of the tournament, the Vikings lost to Riverside 8-6, but then closed out the tournament with a 12-10 victory over Fullerton College.

Sophomore center Chayma Hlanadif led the pack with 18 goals. Sophomore attacker Amara Maxwell and sophomore utility Kaya Barrett both reeled in over 10 steals each for the weekend.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the pool on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Pasadena College in their home opener at 3:00 p.m.

Volleyball- Vikings Battle Cypress in 3-1 Loss


The Long Beach City College Vikings battled with the Cypress College Chargers for four sets, but fell 1-3. The Vikings blasted onto the court in the first set with the 27-25 win, but ultimately could not hold on.

Outside hitter Danika Iosua led the team with 18 kills and had a .237 kill percent. Setter Arianna Ortiz was all over the court as she totaled 21 assists for the Vikings and had five digs. Opposite Kaitlin Noel also performed as she totaled three aces and had four blocks for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will be back in action on the Court on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at East Los Angeles College at 6 p.m.
