Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 9/19/2022: Football Defeats Chaffey with Two Seconds on the Clock

Men's Soccer- Soccer Ties Desert in Thrilling 3-3 Match

The men's soccer team tied with the College of the Desert Roadrunners 3-3 on Friday evening. With the tie, the team holds an overall 3-1-3 record.

The Vikings came out strong, as they were first on the board with a shot from forward Diego Albanez with forward Jose Ventura on the assist. The Roadrunners then tied the games, but the Vikings bounced back with a second chance shot from forward Leo Sanchez to lead 2-1 going into halftime.

In the second half, Desert tied the game 2-2, but then defender William Blanco slammed one in the net from a corner kick from forward Jesus Moreno to take back the lead 3-2 at 81 minutes.

The final goal from the Roadrunners was a penalty shot from a handball in the box to tie and finish the game 3-3.

The Vikings will return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. against LA Mission College at the KLAC. To see the remainder of the men's soccer schedule, click here.


Women's Soccer- Women's Soccer Still Undefeated

The Long Beach City College women's soccer took down Mt. San Jacinto College 4-0 to earn their fifth-consecutive win.

The Vikings defense held their ground, as they did not let the Eagles have one shot on Vivian Toomey's goal.

Forward Genesis Lopez shined up top as she scored two goals for the Vikings. Forward Evelyn Sandoval slammed in a header into the top corner to add another to the scoreboard and forward Diana Leon closed out the game with an amazing kick for the Vikings' fourth goal.

The Vikings traveled to College of the Canyons on Friday evening and tied the Cougars 1-1. The Vikings are still undefeated with a 5-0-1 overall record. To view the Vikings' schedule, click here.


Football- Football Outlasts Chaffey with 31-28 Victory

The No. 19 Long Beach City College Vikings Football team defeated the Chaffey College Panthers 31-28 with two seconds to spare on the clock. With their second home game win, the Vikings hold on to an overall 2-1 record.

Wide receiver Jonathan Watson was the first across the Panther's end zone with a six-yard pass from quarterback Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell in the first quarter. Kicker Mario De la Torre then hit a 30-yard field goal to extend the Vikings lead 10-0. Chaffey snuck in a two-yard run touchdown to only trail behind by three points leading into the second quarter.

Wide receiver Bryce Jones scored for the Vikings early in the quarter to lead the Panthers 17-7, but then Chaffey answered back with a run to close in on the Vikings at 17-14.

After halftime, the Panthers narrowed in on their offense and shut out the Vikings in the third quarter and scored two more touchdowns to now lead the Vikings 28-17.

The Vikings bounced back in the fourth quarter with a run from running back Dajon Newman with three-minutes left in the game. Down by five and two seconds to spare, wide receiver Trennel Ridgely scored from a 23-yard pass and took the win away from the Panthers at 31-28.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the gridiron on Saturday, Sept. 24 at San Diego Mesa College.

Women's Water Polo

Over the weekend, the Vikings competed in the West Valley Invitational.

On Friday, they lost to West Valley College in a nail-biting 13-12 game, but then bounced back on Saturday to take down Merced 12-1 and Delta 13-6.

So far this season, center Chayma Hlanadif has 30 goals tallied with eight steals and nine blocks. Attackers Kaya Barrett and Sierra Cavano each have 13 assists and over 10 goals on the season so far.

The Vikings will return to Long Beach City College this Wednesday, Sept. 21 to host Rio Hondo at 6 p.m. at KLAC.
