Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 9/26/2022: Water Polo Wins at Home, Football Tastes Victory on the Road

Men's Soccer- Soccer Ties LA Mission 2-2

The Long Beach men's soccer team tied the LA Mission College Eagles 2-2 on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Vikings were first on the board with a penalty kick from forward Jesus Moreno to lead the Vikings 1-0. Then the Eagles tied the game 1-1 at the 12-minute mark.

The Eagles then fouled the Vikings in the box again to give then another penalty kick and forward Arnold Giron scored the Vikings' second goal to take back the lead 2-1.

The Eagles landed another one in with a header right at the 45-minute mark to close out halftime, and then both sides remained scoreless in the second half.

The Vikings then traveled to San Bernardino Valley and won 3-1 on Friday evening. The Vikings will be back on the field Oct. 4 against East Los Angele College at 4:15 p.m. at home.

Women's Soccer 

The women's soccer team tied the Chaffey College Panthers last Tuesday 2-2, Genesis Lopez and Dian Leon scored the two goals for the Vikings.

Then the Vikings travelled to Saddleback College on Friday evening and lost 3-1.

Currently the women's soccer team is 5-1-2 overall and is looking forward to being back in action on September 28 at Southwestern College at 6 p.m. To view the Vikings' schedule, click here.


Football

The Vikings brought home a win on Saturday evening with a 28-14 victory at San Diego Mesa College. With the win, the Vikings are 3-1 overall.

Defensive back Thaddeus Dixon was the first to score for the Vikings in the first quarter as he had a 29-yard interception return.

Then in the second half, the Vikings scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter from wide reciever Trennel Ridgely and tight end Ryan Bowers to lead the Olympians 21-0.

Action really took off in the fourth quarter with the Vikings scoring one more touchdown to extend the lead 28-0, and then the Olympians tried to rally with back-to-back touchdowns. But time ran out and the Vikings took home the 28-14 win.

The Vikings will return to Veterans Memorial Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. for their Homecoming game against Golden West College.

Women's Water Polo- Women's Water Polo Blows Through Rio Hondo 22-4

The Vikings water polo team won their second South Coast Conference game against the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 22-4 on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings hold a 7-1 overall record, and are undefeated in conference action with a 2-0 record.

Goalkeeper Danielle Sgontz had four saves against the Roadrunners, while Coryn Cavecche saved seven against the Roadrunners.

"I am very excited that Coach Chris Oeding put his trust in me to be the defensive leader of the team for this game," said Sgontz, about the conference win.

Rylie Guglielmotti tallied four goals with two assists, and one steal against the Roadrunners, and Katie Juarez and Sydney Brouwer each scored three for the Vikings.

The women's water polo team will return to the pool on Wednesday, Sept. 28 against Chaffey College in their third conference game at KLAC at 3:00 p.m. To view the rest of the women's water polo schedule, click here.


Men's Water Polo- Men's Water Polo Takes Down Rio Hondo in Conference Opener

The Long Beach City College men's water polo team shined as they defeated the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 19-7 on Wednesday afternoon in their South Coast Conference opener at the brand new Kinesiology Labs Aquatics Complex. With the win, the Vikings are 4-2 overall, and are 1-0 in conference play.

The Vikings' offense was firing off on the Roadrunners with Nicolas Fedotov, Michael Minera, Itay Batito, and Jake Leslie all scoring three goals each.

"We got the job done," said Coach Djoko Radunovic, when asked about their conference victory. Goalkeepers Blake Borders and Isaac Zabukovec both stood out in the cage with totaling 10 saves between the both of them.

Cross Country

Both men and women took tenth overall in the team standings at the SoCal Regional Preview over the weekend in Bakersfield. Ailene Rios individually finished 11th overall to earn a medal for the Vikings with a time of 19:46. Natalie Mejia was the second finisher for the Vikings with a time of 21:28. Jamileth Alvarado emerged as the third finisher for the Vikings with an improved time of 24:05. Frida Hernandez (24:46) and Lorena Galaviz (24:55) rounded out the top five for the Vikings to earn an average team time of 23:00.

The men's team average improved by over a minute in comparison to their result at their previous race in Fresno. This week in Bakersfield, they averaged 23:16 as a team led by freshman Riki Moscoso with an improved time of 21:56. Other Vikings experienced similar improvements in times. Second for the Vikings was Noah Macias (23:04) followed by Joshua Hanson (23:54), Kyle Chew (24:12), and sophomore Jaydon Moreno (24:26).

The cross-country teams are set to travel to the College of Southern Nevada Invite this Saturday, Oct. 1. The men's race will start at 7 a.m. and the women's race will start at 8:15 a.m. To view the rest of the cross-country schedule, click here.


Volleyball- Long Beach Falls to Pasadena at Home

The Long Beach City College Vikings volleyball team fell to the Pasadena City College Lancers 3-0 on Friday evening in the Building Q Gym.

Freshman outside hitter Danika Iosua was the offensive leader for the Vikings as she totaled two services aces on top of 11 kills. She was a thrill to watch in the air and on the ground with six digs. Freshman setter Arianna Ortiz served as a consistent threat to the Lancers as she totaled 19 assists, along with eight digs.

The Vikings will return to the court on Wednesday, Sept 28 at Orange Coast College at 5:00 p.m.
