Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 10/3/2022: Men’s Water Polo Continues Domination, Cross Country Takes Second at Invitational

Women's Soccer 

The women's soccer team took down Southwestern College 3-1 last Wednesday. Genesis Lopez scored two goals and Diana Leon had one for the Vikings.

Football- No. 11 Football Falls to No. 8 Golden West in Homecoming Game

The No. 11 Long Beach City College Vikings football team fell to the No. 8 Golden West College Rustlers 41-17 on Friday evening in their Homecoming game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 3-2 overall.

The Rustlers were first on the board with three touchdowns in the first quarter, and finally with three minutes left in the quarter, offensive lineman Luke Toomalatai blocked a punt from Golden West to have defensive back Alonso Person return for 20-yards into a Vikings touchdown to close the gap at 21-7.

The Vikings came back from halftime with a 28-yard field goal from kicker Mario De la Torre, but the Rustlers kept pushing forward with two more touchdowns.

The Vikings were able to answer back in the fourth quarter with a touchdown from wide receiver Trennel Ridgley to finalize the game with a 41-17 loss.

The Vikings will return to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. against Ventura College at 6 p.m.

Women's Water Polo- No. 5 Women's Water Polo Still Undefeated in Conference Action with Win Against Chaffey

The No. 5 Long Beach City College women's water polo team defeated the Chaffey College Panthers 21-2 on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings are 8-3 overall and are undefeated in the South Coast Conference with a 3-0 record.

Sophomore attacker Sydney Brouwer went perfect during the game with a three-for-three shot ratio. She said, "We are playing well as a team, despite overcoming injuries."

Sophomore center Carlotta Zandali led the team with four goals and freshman attacker Sierra Cavano totaled four assists for the Vikings.

The Vikings then went on to compete in the Cuesta Invitational over the weekend. On fridya, The Vikings defeated Modesto 22-5 and American Rivers 15-2, but then fell to Riverside 10-6 and Santa Barbara 13-6 on Saturday.

Men's Water Polo- No. 7 Men's Water Polo Defeats Chaffey 19-8

The No. 7 Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the Chaffey College Panthers 19-8 in their second South Coast Conference matchup. With the win, the Vikings hold a 7-4 overall record and are 2-0 in conference action.

Freshman attacker Michael Minera and sophomore defender Jake Leslie both scored four goals for the Vikings, while the rest of the team had a chance to score one each.

"We handled the game very well," said sophomore attacker Ethan Osorio. "It was a good experience for the newer guys to get for upcoming games."

Goalkeepers Blake Borders and Isaac Zabukovec split the game and totaled 11 saves between the two of them.

The Vikings will be back on Friday, Oct. 7 to take on Palomar in the Riverside Tournament at Riverside City College at 11:20 a.m.

Cross Country- Cross-Country Takes Second at CSN Invitational

The men's team took second overall with 37 points at the College of Southern Nevada Invitational. The team average was 29:22, while the total time was 2:26:52.

Freshman Riki Moscoso was again the top finisher for the Vikings as he took second place in the race with a time of 27:46.2, followed by freshmen Alejandro Garcia (28:25.6), Noah Macias (29:34.3), Joey Torres (30:11.8), and Joshua Hanson (30:24.8) who rounded out the top five scorers for the Vikings.

The cross-country team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Mt. San Antonio College Invite in Walnut.

Volleyball

The Long Beach City College Vikings volleyball team had a tough week with two losses to Orange Coast College and to Rio Hondo College.

Against Orange Coast, Danika Iosua led the team with 12 kills, five digs, and three blocks.

The women's volleyball team will return to action at East Los Angeles College at 6p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
