Softball Extends Winning Streak with 12-4 Win Over Citrus

The state-ranked No. 9 Long Beach City College softball team took down the Citrus College Owls 12-4 in six innings on Friday afternoon. With the seventh-consecutive win, the Vikings advance to 15-3 overall.

Freshman pitcher Olivia Ramirez (2-0) earned the win in the circle as she only allowed the Owls to four runs on nine hits, while striking down five. Sophomore pitcher Daisy Torres came in for the save in the final inning as she held the Owls to no hits or runs and struck out two.

The Vikings opened the game strong with six runs to get the ball rolling. The bases were loaded and sophomore left fielder Noelany Benitez got hit by a pitch to walk in freshman catcher Jaylene Ross, then sophomore third baseman Illeana Rivera was walked in for the Vikings' second run. Then freshman second baseman Jennifer Aguilar doubled to left field to score in Benitez and freshman right fielder Kirsten Sanchez. Freshman first baseman Brianna Nunez scored the final run of the inning off a wild pitch to lead 6-0.

The Owls came back with a run in the fourth inning and then rallied in the fifth with a home run, followed by an RBI triple to close in on the Vikings at 6-4.

The Vikings brought back the action in the fifth with an RBI single from freshman designated player Gladys Garcia. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings unleashed with a 2 RBI triple from Ross, a 2 RBI home run from Rivera, and then an RBI single from Nunez to score in freshman pinch runner Jasmine Delgado to seal the Vikings 12-4 win.

The Vikings will be back in action on Monday, March 14 against Riverside College at 3 p.m.
