Women’s Volleyball: Vikings roll to third straight win with sweep of LA Harbor

Freshman Chanel Brown (Lancaster HS) slammed a match-high 15 kills while the Long Beach City College women's volleyball team served up 17 aces in a brief 59-minute sweep of the visiting Los Angeles Harbor College Seahawks on Wednesday at LBCC.

The 25-11, 25-16, 25-11 victory was the Vikings' third straight and improved them to 9-10 overall and 6-4 in South Coast Conference play.

Brown had an impressive .571 hitting percentage on the night to lead the Vikings' offense. When Brown wasn't in on the play, sophomore Bra'shawnda Byrd (Poly HS) was getting the call as she chipped in with 11 kills.

The serving of sophomores Brianna Ritzius (St. Anthony HS) and Daniela Sanchez (Mayfair HS) as well as freshman Alexia Duarte (Mayfair HS) played huge roles in the win. In Set 1 behind the serving of Ritzius, the Vikings turned a 2-2 tie into a 12-2 lead. Later in the first, Duarte served Long Beach to eight straight points and a 24-8 advantage.

And once again in the third set, Ritzius turned a 7-7 tie into a 14-7 lead that the Vikings wouldn't give up. Up 15-10, Sanchez got LBCC to match point thanks to her three aces and nine consecutive points.

Ritzius led all with five aces to go with 10 digs. Duarte and Sanchez both totaled four aces. Freshman Emily Hammond (Brethren Christian HS) had a good all-around night with 26 assists, seven digs, and four kills.

For Harbor (2-12, 0-10 SCC), Amber Ruiz posted five kills, six digs, and four aces.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Nov. 7) when it travels to face El Camino College for a 6 p.m. SCC match.
