Five Long Beach City College student-athletes as well as a
long-time supporter of Viking athletics will be honored on Tuesday
at the 59th annual Long Beach Century Club Sports Night Banquet at
The Grand. Anterio Bateman, Abbey Goodsell, Brock Dale, Jasmine
Hyacinth, Evair Marin, and August "Augie" Luuga are just six among
the dozens of individuals that will be recognized at the City of
Long Beach's premiere sports event.
Bateman of LBCC football and Goodsell from women's basketball were
named the 2014 community college athletes of the year.
Bateman's explosive play on the field helped lead the Viking
football team to a 9-2 overall record this past fall. He became
LBCC's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2004 after collecting 1,135
yards on 158 carries over 11 games. For his efforts, Bateman earned
first-team All-State as well as Southern California Football
Association All-Central League honors.
Goodsell led the 2013-14 LBCC women's basketball team to a
school-record 26 wins as the Vikings advanced to the fourth-round
of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. She earned first-team
All-State honors and was also selected as the South Coast
Conference South Division Most Valuable Player.
In November, Goodsell committed to Sacramento State University and
will play for the Hornets next season.
Football's Dale and Hyacinth of women tennis both earned the
Harold Hofman Scholarship award. The $2500 scholarship is given
annually to a top male and female LBCC student-athlete that excels
in the classroom.
Marin was named the Century Club's Boy's Soccer Athlete of the Year
after an impressive 2014 senior season at Cabrillo High School.
Marin competed for the LBCC men's soccer team this past
fall.
Luuga, a staff member in the Instructional and Information
Technology Services department at LBCC, has volunteered countless
hours to athletics. He has been a member of the LBCC Foundation
Athletic Associates group since1990 and has also served as a
statistician with the Viking football team since 1994. He will
receive the citizen's Bob and Nell Kariger Award.
The Long Beach Century Club is a non-profit institution that
raises money for local schools’ sports programs.
