USC Names Trojan Invitational after Ron & Sharlene Allice

On April 8, Vikings Track & Field Coach Ron Allice was honored at the University of Southern California (USC), as the Trojan Invitational meet will take on his and his wife, Sharlene's name and will now be known as the Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational.

Allice, a former Head Track & Field/Cross Country Coach with the Vikings, is a legendary and iconic figure in the sport of track & field, who brings a wealth of knowledge to our men's and women's sprint teams.

"It is an absolute honor having the opportunity to Coach alongside Ron Allice, a legend in our sport, every single day," said Vikings Director of Track & Field Marcus Carroll. "He has won at every institution he has served under, including our very own. The mentorship and guidance that he provides not only to me but also to our entire coaching staff, is what drives the recent success we are seeing currently with our programs. We are fortunate that he continues to work with our student-athletes here at Long Beach City College."

"Ron Allice has a strong influence on the young generation and has valuable insight and knowledge about track and field," said Women's Track & Field Head Coach Karen Vigilant. "He provided guidance to both young and seasoned coaches. Coach Allice has paved the path as to what it means to be successful in the world of track and field."

Allice came to Long Beach City College to become the head coach for the track & field and cross-country teams from 1979-1994, where he brought home 16 conferences, 14 Southern California, and 11 State championship titles. His programs have produced more than 313 All-Americans, 27 Olympians, 4 world record holders, and 7 American record holders. His teams won 78 out of 79 dual meets during his time at the helm.

After his time at LBCC, Allice went on to become the Director of Track & Field at USC for 19 years. During his time at USC, Allice led the men's and women's programs to 25 NCAA top 20 finishes, with a 2001 NCAA women's team title and 32 individual NCAA titles. Allice retired from USC in 2013.

Athletic Director Kal Stewart said, "Coach Ron Allice is a true icon and legend in the world of Track & Field and his wealth of knowledge and experience is a priceless asset to our sprint teams. With his guidance and support, our athletes have already achieved incredible success, including all-American, all-state, and world-class leading achievements. Coach Allice is an inspiration to us all; we are privileged to have him as a part of our program, and want to acknowledge how deserving he is of this honor."
