Baseball: Hale, Navar, Patchen top Long Beach all-conference honors

Long Beach City College freshmen starting pitchers Sean Hale, and Edgar Navar, and sophomore third baseman Ray Patchen recently were named first-team All-South Coast Conference at last week's postseason SCC coaches meeting. The three head a list of six Vikings to earn All-SCC honors.

Hale (left), the ace of the Vikings' rotation this season, was 5-2 in SCC games with a 2.36 earned run average. He struck out 27 batters in 49.2 innings pitched.

Navar (center) went 3-4 for LBCC but had an impressive 1.96 ERA. He also struck out 27 SCC batters in 41.1 innings pitched.

Patchen (right) had a team-best .361 conference batting average with 30 hits in 83 at bats. He smacked seven doubles and had 13 RBI.

Sophomore shortstop Derrick Garcia was named second-team all-conference for LBCC. Garcia hit .347 in conference games with 26 hits. He also drove in nine runs and played solid defense with a .962 fielding percentage.

Sophomore infielder Avery Flores, sophomore catcher Jaime Valle, and sophomore outfielder Phil Visico were named All-SCC Honorable Mention.

Flores had 20 hits and stole seven bases while Valle had 20 hits with 10 RBI and threw out five attempted base stealers. Visico had 18 hits with 12 RBI. He also walked 13 times.

Long Beach closed the 2013 season with a 21-15 overall record and was fourth in the South Coast Conference with a 12-9 record.
