Former Viking standout Karen Vigilant enters her 21st season in 2024 as Head Coach of the Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country Program. In 2004, her first season with the Vikings, she led several women to an Individual South Coast Conference Championship and a CCCAA State Championship. The women’s team that season earned a 3rd place finish overall at the CCCAA State Championships. Since then, she has continued to produce many Conference, SoCal Regional and State Champions that are listed below. Her latest State Champion was Casey Davis who earned the top finish at the CCCAA State Championship in 2022. Additional All-Americans in the 2022 season were Radiance Lindsey (100m hurdles/400m hurdles), and the women’s 4x400 team (Taj Grant, Radiance Lindsey, Destinee Reid and Natalie Mejia). The women’s team placed 8th overall in 2022, marking their highest team finish in a State Championship since 2006.

As a student-athlete, Vigilant was an outstanding sprinter. She holds three school records as a viking sprinter in the 400 hurdles, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x400 meter relay. Vigilant was also the California State champion in the the 400 meter hurdles in 1994 and in 1995 she was the California state champion in the 100 meter hurdles, 4x100 meter relay and the 4x 400 meter relay. In 1995 Vigilant was a member of the Viking team that won the California State Championship held in Bakersfield, California. She went on to compete for Arizona State University.

Vigilant received her Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and hearing science from Arizona State University in 1998, She received her California Teaching Credential from California State University, Long Beach in 2001 and her Master's degree in Physical Education and Health from Azusa Pacific University in 2005.

She is a member of the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions (athletic hall of fame) and Wilson High School Hall of Fame.
