Men's Soccer - Men's Soccer Brings in All-SCC Accolades
It was recently announced by the South Coast Conference (SCC) that six Long Beach City College men's soccer players earned All-SCC South honors following a 3-2-3 record in conference. Freshman midfielder Ruben Menjivar, sophomore defender Julian Guerrero, and freshman defender Adrian Martinez all brought in first-team accolades, while freshman midfielder Oskar Raymundo, sophomore goalkeeper Andres Figueroa-Flores and sophomore midfielder Fabio Mujica all earned second-team honors. Menjivar earned his first-career All-SCC award from being a force at midfield. He played in 20 games this season and started in 19. Menjivar scored three goals and had three assists throughout the season. He was reliable at midfield to keep the steady flow of the offense towards the opponents. Guerrero joined Menjivar on the first-team All-SCC after providing a solid defense on the backline all season, especially during conference. Along with his excellent defensive skills, Guerrero had one goal and assisted his team twice. Martinez rounded out the first-team honors for the Vikings with his quality one on one defense. Martinez showed his talents by starting in 21 games and held an assist against Compton College. Raymundo starred as a seasoned midfielder for the Vikings. He demonstrated his impressive offensive skills with goals against Golden West and Rio Hondo. He was a major contributor to the team's impressive season start. Figueroa-Flores earned his first second-team honors following a tremendous season in the cage. Figueroa- Flores totaled over 80 saves for the season after starting in 21 games. He was a leader on the field for the Vikings and earned a .824 save percentage for the season. Figueroa Flores was impressive in-between the two bars and demonstrated his athletic ability consistently with his skills. Mujica tallied his second consecutive All-SCC selection this year with his talents. Mujica scored his first goal of the season in the first game against Cerritos to tie the game. He also acquired four assists in conference this season.
Women's Volleyball- South Coast Conference Announces Vazquez as Most Valuable Player & Cole as Libero of the Year
It was recently announced by the South Coast Conference (SCC) that seven women's volleyball players earned All-Conference recognition. Highlighting the award winners is freshman outside hitter, Josannah Vazquez, who was named the SCC Co-Most Valuable Player of the Year, and freshman Shelby Cole as the Libero of the Year. Freshman setter Sierra Davis, sophomore opposite Tatyana Umi and freshman setter Lusia Lutali all earned first-team accolades, while sophomore middle blockers Andrea Edwards and Valeria Payan brought in second-team honors. Furthermore, second-year head coach Misty May-Treanor was named All-SCC Co-Coach of the Year. May-Treanor, led the group of talented athletes in an impressive first-place showing in conference after a 6-1 record. This year, the team held 16-game winning streak that bled through conference. Since being at Long Beach City College, May-Treanor has made her second-consecutive post season appearance. Vazquez was named Co-Most Valuable Player of the Year in the SCC along with Aiko Waters from El Camino College. Vazquez was first in conference with a kill percentage of .370 and averaged 3.5 kills per game. In total for the year so far, Vazquez has 215 kills, five assists and 109 digs. Cole has earned the SCC Libero of the Year for the Vikings. She led the team with over 200 digs and has participated in 59 sets so far. Cole is the backbone of the team with over 40 assists under her belt this season. Her leadership as the libero is a strong force that creates a dominant atmosphere for the Vikings. Davis reels in first-team recognition after being a force on offense for Long Beach. Davis has brought in over 120 kills, 319 assists and averages 2.22 kills per set for the Vikings. She sits third in the conference with averaging 5.80 assists per set. Umi brings in first-team honors with providing her offensive and defensive skill set to the Vikings. Umi tallies 178 kills thus far this season, along with 33 total blocks at the net. She is a force that continues to provide athletic skill and talent to the team's success. Finishing off the first-team honors is Lutali. She burst on the court as the prime setter by totaling 332 assists with 107 assists in conference. On the serve, Lutali is an offensive threat. In conference, she has recorded seven service aces and 10 total throughout the season. Edwards earns second-team honors after recording 73 kills, 15 digs and 37 blocks. Edwards demonstrated strength and precision at the net throughout the season, especially in conference to make her unstoppable. Payan rounds out the second-team accolades by earning her second All-SCC honors. Payan was a defensive threat at the net by smashing 41 blocks, along with tallying 105 points for the Vikings. Over the weekend, the No. 10 Vikings fell in the second round of the California Community College Athletics Association SoCal Regional Playoffs to No. 2 Mira Costa College, 0-3. Freshman outside hitter, Josannah Vazquez was recently named to the All-Southen California Regional Team.
Men's Water Polo- South Coast Conference Names Martinez the 2017 MVP & Kasa as Coach of the Year
It was recently announced by the South Coast Conference (SCC) that eight Long Beach City College men's water polo players were honored with All-SCC selections after an undefeated conference season. Leading off the awards was sophomore attacker Myles Martinez, who was named the 20017 SCC Most Valuable Player of the Year. Sophomore goalkeeper Carl Matthews, sophomore attacker, Aaron Mowl and sophomore utility Chaz Harker were all named to the first-team all-conference list, while sophomore attacker Mario Moran and freshman attacker Kobe Jackson earned spots on the second-team list. Furthermore, freshman attacker Ludovico Mensa and sophomore utility Ian Dretzka earned Honorable Mention accolades. Alongside the All-Conference selections, Coach Dave Kasa was honored with the 2017 SCC Coach of the Year Award. This is Kasa's eleventh SCC Coach of the Year Award in his seventeenth year as part of the LBCC staff. Kasa led the men's water polo to an undefeated 7-0 record in the conference and then placed third in the state. Martinez earns the SCC Most Valuable Player of the Year after scoring 69 goals and having 36 steals this season. This is Martinez's second-consecutive All-SCC first-team honors. Martinez was the offensive catalyst on the team and the sharp shooter to the corners of the goals. During the SoCal Regional Playoffs, Martinez scored eight out of 14 goals against No. 1 Golden West College. Matthews brings home first-team honors with being unstoppable in the cage. As the last line of defense for the Vikings, Matthews was a wall in the cage that could reach beyond the top cross bar and block his opponent's shots. Mowl adds to the All-SCC list with his fundamental skills in the water. Mowl scored 38 goals this season with nine assists. With burst attacks to the ball, he managed to inherit 18 steals for the Vikings. Harker rounds out the All-SCC first-team list with being a two-time All-SCC selection. This season, Harker scored 43 goals and assisted his teammates in scoring 19 times. Harker was a big offensive help with scoring in the final game for third place in the State Championships against Sierra. Moran earns second-team accolades with triumphant offensive efforts. Moran helped lead the Vikings to victory in conference over Cerritos College by scoring two of the goals. Jackson finalizes the second-team All-SCC list by earning his way with being an effective attacker. Jackson has scored 29 goals within 24 games this season. He has turned the ball over for the Vikings with 20 steals. Mensa was named with honorable mentions to the All-SCC list. In his debut season for the Vikings, Mensa has scored over 35 goals and tops the list for 26 steals. Dretzka rounds out the All-SCC list with honorable mentions. Dretzka was a powerhouse in the pool, and was able to steer his opponents into wrong positioning. Dretzka scored 16 goals in conference and 27 in the overall season.
Women's Water Polo- Johnson Named South Coast Conference MVP for Second Consecutive Year
After the women's water polo team hauled in their third consecutive South Coast Conference (SCC) title this year, it was recently announced that six players were named to the All-SCC teams. Head coach Chris Oeding was named the SCC Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive year following an undefeated conference showing. Furthermore, sophomore attacker Victoria Johnson was named the SCC Most Valuable Player for the second year in row. Sophomore attacker Lindsey Mizrahi, sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Bennett, freshman defender Stephany Velazquez and freshman attacker Charity Lopes were all named to the SCC first-team, while freshman Harlie Whelan and sophomore defender Charli Chavarria were honored with second-team accolades. Oeding is recognized as the 2017 SCC Coach of the Year for the seventh time following a second-consecutive undefeated conference record. Oeding finishes the women's season 21-7 overall and also an impressive 396-117 career record at Long Beach. Johnson is recognized as the SCC Most Valuable Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season after proving to be the leading offensive force. This season in 25 games played, Johnson ranked third in the CCCAA with 96 goals, 25 assists and had 41 steals. During the season, Johnson had a game-high scoring of eight goals in two separate games. During water polo career at Long Beach City College, Johnson has impressed with her offensive skills and has totaled over 200 goals. Mizrahi earned first-team accolades by being an offensive threat in the set position. This season, Mizrahi has scored 28 goals with 14 assists. This is Mizrahi's second All-SCC selection as last year she earned second-team nods for her offensive efforts. Bennett earned her first-team honors after being a force to be reckoned with in the cage. Bennett tallied 109 saves this season and was a defensive leader, who used her voice in the pool to steer the Vikings. Velazquez was the solid defender of the team and the quarterback of the team at top of the umbrella offense. She was honored with first-team recognition for her universal talents on defense and her transitional skills to offense. Velazquez had 60 steals to go along with 46 goals on the season. Lopes received the final first-team honors for the Vikings with her work on offense. Lopes scored 31 goals this season and had 22 assists. Her ability to maneuver through the water was noticed by her opponents as they adjusted to her style of play. Whelan reeled in second-team recognition with tallying 29 goals in her debut season for the Vikings, while dishing out 22 assists. Whelan was an all-around threat and was quick on defense with 31 steals. Chavarria rounded out the All-SCC honors for the Vikings by receiving second-team accolades. Chavarria was recognized for her defensive skills in the pool and being the last line of defensive before Bennett.
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season last Wednesday to LA Valley College 52-80. The Vikings kicked off their weekend in the Ventura Kiwanis Tournament on Friday, Nov 24 with a loss to San Joaquin Delta 56-75. Then on Friday, Long Beach defeated Santa Monica College 65-54 and Taft College 70-63. Sophomore guard Doylebonet Walker was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
