Long Beach City College Athletics to host third annual Coaches vs. Cancer, Feb. 19

Long Beach City College Athletics and the California Community College Men's and Women's Basketball Coaches Association have teamed up to support Coaches vs. Cancer with a great night of fundraising and awareness. On February 19, the state-ranked Long Beach City College men's and women's basketball teams will face Los Angeles Southwest College in South Coast Conference games at the Hall of Champions Gym as part of a this worthy cause.

The event, sponsored by Jersey Mike’s Subs of Long Beach, begins at 4 pm, with the No. 4 state-ranked Long Beach women playing at 5 pm, followed by the No. 17 Viking men at 7 pm.

Halftime of each game will feature a fundraising free throw shootout. Associate Vice President of Human Resources Cindy Vyskocil will take on Human Resources Specialist Crystal McCutcheon during the women’s break while Director of Athletics Joe Cascio will challenge Director of District Facilities Tim Wootton at the men’s halftime. Individuals and groups can pledge any amount per free throw or a lump sum towards each player to help raise funds.

There will also be a health fair in the foyer of the gym, along with contests, giveaways, and numerous other ways to donate towards the fundraising efforts throughout the evening.

A $5 donation is requested for general admission while LBCC students and staff are free. Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

Last year, LBCC raised $2,800 towards a state-wide donation of $42,000 to the American Cancer Society. This year, the Athletic Department hopes to double its contribution.
