No. 4 Long Beach ties school record for wins with victory over LA Southwest

Sophomore Shakeena Benton (Lakewood HS) scored 14 points while sophomore Destinn Romain (Vista Murrieta HS) came off the bench to score 12 points to help lead the No. 4 state-ranked Long Beach City College women's basketball team to a 57-44 win over Los Angeles Southwest College in the Vikings' regular-season finale on Wednesday at the Hall of Champions Gym.

Long Beach overcame a poor night shooting and had to hold off an upset-minded Southwest squad. LBCC made just 23 of 63 field goal attemps. The Couagrs remained close until the final minutes of the second half. Southwest was within two points at 42-40 with 5:48 left in the second  before the Vikings closed out the game outscoring the Cougars by a 15-4 margin.


With the victory, LBCC tied its school record for wins in a season with 24. The Vikings are now 24-4 overall and wrapped up their South Coast Conference South Division championship schedule at 11-2.

LBCC will learn its playoff fate on Sunday when playoff seedings are announced at the Southern California postseason coaches meeting. Long Beach, currently ranked No. 3 in Southern California, will likely host a second-round playoff game at the Hall of Champions Gym.
