Joe Lanning, employed full-time or part-time at LBCC from 1955-96 as a mathematics instructor and coach. He was head coach for the first-ever state champion track and field team in 1963, and as an assistant coach contributed to 14 more state champion squads. Lanning also led cross country teams to a pair of conference crowns and was an assistant coach on the 1960 and 1962 LBCC national champion football teams. He was inducted into the California Community College Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1973.
