Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 11/1/2021: Men’s Soccer Upsets Cerritos, Men’s Cross Country Places Second in the SCC

The Vikings fell to the Bakersfield College Renegades on Saturday night 28-14. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 3-5 overall and are 1-2 in conference play.

Sophomore defensive back De'Jon Vanhook had a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown to put the Vikings on the board in the first half. Then in the third quarter, Bakersfield scored two touchdowns to lead the Vikings 14-7.

In the fourth quarter, the Renegades scored a 22-yard run to extend their lead 21-7, but then the Vikings came back with a 29-yard run from sophomore wide receiver Zechariah Dolphin to close in 14-21. Bakersfield had one more in them as they had a 93-yard interception return in the final minute of the game to take the 28-14 win over the Vikings.

The Vikings will return to the Veterans Memorial Stadium next Saturday, Nov. 6 against Allan Hancock College at 6 p.m. To view the remaining football schedule, click here.


Women's Soccer- Long Beach Women's Soccer Slides Past Cerritos

The Long Beach City College Vikings blanked the Cerritos College Falcons 1-0 in their last conference home game before the South Coast Conference Tournament in November. With the win, the Vikings advance to 8-5-2 overall and are5-3 in conference action.

It was sophomore day, so sophomore forwards Jennifer Skrumbis and Allison Rose Veloz were honored at the beginning of the game for their time with the Vikings.

During the game, freshman goalkeeper Jocelynn Sotelo had two saves for the Vikings against the Falcons.

During the first half, the Vikings and the Falcons were scoreless. Then in the 78th minute and after three shots on goal, Veloz finally connected to the back of the net to take the game for the Vikings 1-0.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at East Long Angeles College at 2 p.m. To view the rest of the schedule, click here.


Men's Soccer- Men's Soccer Shuts Out Cerritos 2-0

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team was a force to reckon with on Friday afternoon against the Cerritos College Falcons. The Vikings blanked the Falcons 2-0 and snapped the Falcons 7-0 conference winning-streak. With the win, the Vikings advance to 7-3-6 overall and are 4-2-2 in the South Coast Conference.

Sophomore goalkeeper Oliver Juarez was on his toes the entire game and blocked everything that came his way, while saving two from the net.

Freshman right wing Jesus Moreno was the first on the board with a strike to the back of the Falcons net, and the assist from sophomore midfielder Miguel Arroyo to lead 1-0 going into halftime. Then in the second half, Moreno blasted another one from the box to take the 2-0 win for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the field on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. at East Los Angeles College.


Women's Volleyball

The Vikings fell to the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 3-1(17-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-18) last Friday evening.

Freshman opposite Noronzie Malala led the team with eight kills and had four blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Abeni Williams-Lowery was a wall at the net as she totaled seven blocks.

Women's Water Polo

Women's water polo took down the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 13-4 last Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings will now go in to the South Coast Conference Championships undefeated 7-0.

Freshman center Chayma Hlanadif led the team with four goals had drew two ejections for the Vikings. Sophomore attacker Rachel Westphal, freshman center Carlotta Zandali, freshman utility Kaya Barrett, and freshman attacker Lisa Bautista each tallied two goals for Long Beach.

 Men's Water Polo

The men's water polo team defeated the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 15-10. Freshman attacker Tommaso Baldineti had six goals and four steals.

Freshman goalkeepers Kai Goeku and Isaac Zabukovec shared the cage and had two saves each. The Vikings will be back in the pool this weekend for the South Coast Conference Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. To see the remainder of the schedule, click here.
 


Cross Country- Men's Cross Country Takes Second at the South Coast Conference Championships

The Long Beach City College men's cross-country team took home second place at the South Coast Conference Championships on Friday morning at Wilson Park in Torrance. The women's team came in fourth place with 98 points.

Freshman Leonardo Acevedo placed the highest for the Vikings with an 11th place finish with a time of 21:49.2 in the men's four-mile race. Right behind him was sophomore Jonathan Ruiz in 12th place with a time of 21:49.9

For the women's team, freshman Aliene Rios took home 16th place in the 5K run with a time of 21:23.5. Sophomore Vanessa Washington finished in the 17th with 21:30.0 on the clock.

The Vikings will run again at the SoCal Regional Championships at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley on Saturday, Nov. 6.
