Women's Soccer- No. 4 Women's Soccer Takes Down No. 5 Cerritos in SCC Championship Match Up

The No. 4 women's soccer team defeated the No. 5 Cerritos College Falcons 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With their third-consecutive shutout win, the Vikings advance to 10-5-2 overall and are 7-3 in conference action.

Freshman goalkeeper Jocelynn Sotelo has not let anything by her in three games. Today she was still unstoppable with two saves for the Vikings to hold on to her shutout streak.

The Vikings were scoreless with the Falcons in the first half, but then came out ready to win after the break. Freshman forward Alieza Vargas Deason was the first on the board with a sly left pass from sophomore forward Jennifer Skrumbis to blast the ball in the back of the Falcon's net to take the lead.

Then freshman midfielder Haley Obenshain took her opportunity to score with the assist from freshman forward Andrea Martinez to seal the 2-0 win for the Vikings. The No. 4 Vikings will be back in action in the South Coast Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at No. 1 Rio Hondo College at 1p.m. To view the rest of the schedule, click here.

Men's Soccer

In a game that pitted two teams that tied earlier in the season, as well as in the SCC league standings, Long Beach City College and Rio Hondo College tied 0-0 in regulation. The game went directly to penalty kicks where the Vikings advanced, on a three to two advantage, onto the semi-finals against conference regular season champions, Mt. San Antonito College.

The game was a tightly contested battle that saw most of the action take place in the middle third of the field. Neither keeper was called upon much during the match as sophomore goalkeeper keeper Oliver Juarez had two saves in regulation, and the Roadrunners keeper had five. Long Beach did have two excellent scoring opportunities in the first half. The first shot attempt by sophomore forward Cameron Badal that was taken from 20 yards out was headed towards the upper corner, if not for the diving save by the keeper. Long Beach's second chance was a bit more controversial, as the Vikings strung together seven passes and found freshman midfielder Eduardo Mosqueda open from six yards out. Mosqueda's first touch set him up beautifully where he then placed the ball in the back of the net. The referee then blew his whistle, and said that there was a foul committed by Long Beach earlier in the play that negated the goal.

With the game ending in a tie, there needed to be a penalty kick tiebreaker to see who would advance onto the next round. Rio Hondo won the coin toss and elected to go first. Juarez made the first of his three penalty saves when he dove to his left and caught the ball. Sophomore outside back Brian Chung, freshman right wing Jesus Moreno, and freshman wing Jose Ventura all converted their attempts, giving them the three to two advancement.

The Vikings will travel to Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. for the semi-final match of the South Coast Conference Tournament.
