Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 11/29/2021: Soccer Finishes Season, Cross Country Competes in State Championships

 


Football- Football Ends Season With a 31-17 Victory Over Allan Hancock

The Long Beach City College football team took down the Allan Hancock Bulldogs on Friday evening 31-17. With the conference win, the Vikings finish the season 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Vikings came onto the gridiron ready for action as freshman wide receiver Trenell Ridgley opened the game with a nine-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Derrach West, then the Vikings hit the PAT from freshman kicker Ryder Padilla to lead the Bulldogs 10-0.

West was phenomenal throughout the game as he totaled 94 yard in the air, including two touchdown passes and had 54 yards on the ground.

Hancock attacked in the second quarter with two touchdowns to take the lead away from the Vikings 14-10. But then with one second left in the half, sophomore wide receiver Zack Leets ran one more in for the Vikings to take back the lead from the Bulldogs 17-41.

In the third quarter, the freshman defensive back Thaddeus Dixon blocked a Bulldog punt and scored a safety to add two more to the scoreboard. Dixon also tallied five tackles and had one breakup during the game.

In the fourth quarter, freshman wide receiver Jaylon Morgan caught an 11-yard pass from freshman quarterback Blaze McKibbin to extend the Vikings' lead 25-14. Allan Hancock made one last effort to tame the Vikings and scored a 50-yard field goal, but the Vikings weren't done yet. In the very last second of the game, freshman left back Drew Wilson smashed a 30-yard interception return to seal the 31-17 with and this chapter of the 2021 season.

The Vikings will return to the field Fall 2022.


Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team fell to the Saddleback College Bobcats 4-0 in the first round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs. Previously, the Vikings defeated the San Diego City College Knights 4-0 in the play-in round to advance to round one.

Freshman midfielder Monserrath Galindo had three shots on the Bobcats, but the Vikings weren't able to complete.

Freshman goalkeeper Jocelynn Sotelo totaled six saves for the Vikings.

The women's soccer team will return next Fall.


Men's Soccer

The Long Beach City College men's soccer team also competed in Round 1 of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs last Saturday at Santa Ana College against Bakersfield College.

The Renegades were on the board in the first half, but then the Vikings came back in the second half with two goals from freshman right wing Jesus Moreno and freshman center back Adrian Acevedo to lead 2-1. Then the Renegades tied the game in the 88th minute to go into overtime.

The first overtime period went scoreless, but then Bakersfield scored in the second overtime period to take the 3-2 win and advance to the second round of the playoffs.

The men's soccer team will return next Fall.


Cross Country- Cross Country Competes at CCCAA State Championships

The men and women's cross-country team competed in the California Community College Athletics Association State Championships over the holiday weekend.

The men's team raced in the four-mile event, placed 21st with a total time of 1:54:26, and had an average time of 22:53. The women's team competed in the 3.1-mile race, took home 13th place with a total time of 1:48:40, and had an average time of 21:44.

Freshman Leonardo Acevedo was first for the Vikings on the men's side as he placed in the top 100 with a time of 21:28.6 and averaged 5:22.2 per mile.

Freshman Ailene Rios came in 33rd place for the Vikings with a time of 19:48.4 and averaged 6:23.4 per mile.

The Vikings will be back next Fall.
 


Men's Basketball

The Long Beach City College men's basketball team had two games last week. In their first game at Cypress College, the Vikings lost 86-84 in OT on Wednesday, Nov. 24, then went on to defeat the Riverside City College Tigers 61-51 on Saturday, Nov. 27.

In the game against Cypress, freshman forwards Kameron Mayhan and Shane Hunter garnered the double-doubles with Mayhan totaling 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Hunter with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

In the game against Riverside, Hunter led the team with 15 points and had seven rebounds. The Vikings led the first half 28-23, and then again in the second half 33-28.

The Vikings will be back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in the Hall of Champions at 6 p.m. To view the rest of the men's basketball schedule, click here.


Women's Basketball

Over the holiday week, the Vikings participated in the Ventura College Tournament and advanced all the way to the finals. The Vikings then fell to Canyons 71-59 and took home the second place trophy.

Sophomore wing Navi Huskey led the team with 15 points and 18 rebounds, along with three assists and four steals.

The Vikings will return to the court today at San Bernardino Valley College at 5 p.m.
