Men's Basketball- Vikings Fall to Cerritos in Conference Action


The Long Beach City College men's basketball team fell to the Cerritos College Falcons 69-80 on Wednesday evening in the Hall of Champions. With the loss the Vikings drop to 8-10 overall and are 1-2 in the South Coast Conference.

The Vikings opened the game with the lead jumper from sophomore guard Khieem Williams, but then Williams found himself in foul trouble early on. The Vikings closed the half on trailing the Falcons by six points.

At the end of the game, freshman guard Tremond Johnson led the Vikings with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists, while freshman guard Lorenzo Marsh tallied 14 points and five rebounds.

The Vikings then traveled to Compton College on Friday, Jan. 28 and took down the Tartars 102-95. Freshmen guards Bonard Johnson Jr., Shante Hunter and Kameron Mayhan all have over 20 points for the Vikings.

The Vikings will be back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 2 against LA Harbor in the Hall of Champions at 5 p.m.

Women's Basketball- Women's Basketball Suffers Tough Loss to Cerritos

The No. 17 women's basketball team fell to the Cerritos College Falcons 57-62 in the Hall of Champions on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Vikings drop to 12-6 overall and 1-1 conference play.

The Vikings opened the game leading the Falcons 16-10 in the first quarter and 14-13 in the second quarter. After halftime, the Falcons stepped up their game and dominated the Vikings 24-16, then out shot them 15-11 in the fourth quarter to take the 62-57 win.

Freshman wing Aaliyah Carter had a game with the double double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. She was unstoppable for the Vikings as she was all over the rim. Sophomore center Ivori Scott also shined in the key for the Vikings as she hit the double double as well with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

The Vikings will return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 2 against LA Harbor in the Hall of Champions.

Softball- Vikings Win in Home Opener Against OCC

The Long Beach City College Vikings opened their brand new softball complex with a 4-2 victory over Orange Coast College to kick off the 2022 season.

Sophomore pitcher Daisy Torres (1-0) earned her first win in the circle with only allowing the Pirates to two runs on seven hits, while shutting out seven.

The Pirates were first on the board in the top of the first with an RBI triple to center field. Then when the Vikings were up in the bottom of the first, sophomore third baseman Illeana Rivera doubled to center field knocking in sophomore second baseman Jade Wittman and freshman shortstop Jaylene Ross to take the lead 2-1.

In the top of the third, the Pirates got back on the board with an RBI double, but the Vikings were ready to battle and sophomore left fielder Noelany Benitez hit a sacrifice fly to score in freshman designated player Jennifer Aguilar.

In the fifth inning, Rivera wasn't done yet as she smashed a double to left field to score in Wittman for the Viking's final run and take the 4-2 win over Orange Coast.

The Vikings will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 3 at Rio Hondo College for their first South Coast Conference game at 3 p.m.

Baseball- Baseball Takes Down IVC 7-1 in Home Opener

The Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the Irvine Valley College Lasers 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Vikings Baseball Field.

Freshman pitcher Evan Vazquez (1-0) took the win on the mound with only allowing the Lasers to one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Freshman pitcher Marcellus Henry came in for the final two innings and struck down two.

The Lasers were first on the board in the top of the third with an RBI double, but then the Vikings rallied in the bottom of fourth inning to put up four runs. Freshman designated hitter Matthew Pinal started the rally with an RBI double to bring in freshman shortstop Alex Seguine, then freshman third baseman Justin Santoyo hit a bomb to center field to score in Pinal and freshman center fielder Bryan Sanders. Freshman right fielder JT Mendoza finalized the rally with a sacrifice fly to bring in Santoyo and lead the Lasers 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Seguine was batted in from a sacrifice fly from Sanders and in the bottom of the seventh; Santoyo had an RBI ground out to bring Seguine across the plate again. Pinal was the last Vikings across from freshman first baseman Will Schwab's RBI single to left field to finalize the 7-1 win for the Vikings.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will return to the field on Tuesday, Feb. against Chaffey College at 2 p.m.

LBCC Hall of Champions To Welcome Class of 2022 on March 18

The outstanding tradition of Long Beach City College (LBCC) intercollegiate athletics will be recognized with the induction of its 17th class of members into the college's Hall of Champions on Friday, March 18, at The Grand: 4101 E Willow St., Long Beach, CA 90815 at 5 p.m.

Since winning its first state title in 1928, the Long Beach City College Athletic Department continues to amass conference, state and national titles. Our athletes play in the most demanding leagues in Southern California and have captured more state titles than any other community college in California.

Long Beach City College is recognized throughout California as both an academic and athletic leader. Thousands of LBCC athletes have received scholarships from nearly every university in the nation. We point with pride to these athletes.

Athletics is an important part of the total college experience. The athletic event provides students an opportunity to develop valuable skills such as teamwork, self-discipline, problem solving and leadership that can be useful in everyday life situations.

The purpose of the Hall of Champions is to recognize individuals and teams who have developed these skills and contributed to the outstanding accomplishments of the LBCC Athletic Program.

Former student athletes, championship teams, coaches, and others who have contributed significantly to Viking athletics will be eligible for a place in the Hall of Champions. A selection committee will review those nominated and an induction banquet will be held yearly to celebrate the achievements of those selected.

LBCC has always had outstanding coaches, many who have moved on to university and professional teams. Together, students and staff have made the program unparalleled in community college athletics.

The athletic department embraces every student, from the one who "just wants to play," to the one who has all the desire, dedication and talent to become an All-American or Olympian.

The 2022 Hall of Champions honorees are Cia Cobb (Aquatics, 2001-2003), Vern Followell (Baseball, 1976 & 1977), Richard Graves (Track & Field, 1985- 1986), Jim Murphy (Football/Wrestling, 1960-1961), Mark Robbins (Football/Track, 1980-1981), Derek Santifer (Football, 1985-1986), Grant Uba (Meritorious, 1991-2018), Kristian Wintrich (Volleyball, 1994-1995).
