Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 3/21/2022: Softball Ranked Ninth in the State/fifth in SoCal, Swim Showcases on State Leaderboard

Softball

The state-ranked No. 9 softball team had five games this past week. In the first game of the week against Riverside, the Vikings defeated the Tigers with a nine-inning 4-3 walk-off win.

In their second game of the week, the Vikings hosted Pasadena for a South Coast Conference match-up and took down the Lancers 13-3. The Vikings then traveled to Cerritos, where they fell 10-1, but were back in action on Friday with a doubleheader against Ventura.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Vikings had a 4-3 win, but then lost in the second game 4-1.

The Vikings will be back on the field on Tuesday, March 22 at El Camino College at 3 p.m.

Baseball- Baseball Takes Down San Bernardino Valley 5-2 at Home

The Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings advance to 11-10 overall.

Freshman left handed pitcher Jake Habelitz (1-0) earned the win on the hill, while freshman pitcher Matthew Pinal earned his first save in the final three innings.

The Vikings got started in the bottom of the fourth inning with a 2RBI home run to left field from freshman right fielder Raul Garcia.

The Wolverines came back with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings kept rolling with an RBI single to left field from freshman shortstop Alex Seguine to score in freshman left fielder JT Mendoza to bring up the score 3-1.

Seguine smashed another RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and scored in freshman second baseman Kamau Neighbors. Then Seguine was scored in off a fielder's choice to extend the Vikings' lead to five.

In the top of the ninth, the Wolverines score one more unearned run, but couldn't close the gap and the Vikings held on to the 5-2 victory.

Beach Volleyball

The Long Beach City College beach volleyball team defeated the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties 5-0, but then fell to the El Camino College Warriors 3-2 on Friday morning at the new sand courts at the Kinesiology Labs and Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Lizbeth Lopez/ freshman Karyzma Aualiitia, and freshman Jennifer Lias/ sophomore Celestial Ropati swept the Mounties in two sets in game one. While the other teams each won in three.

Against the Warriors, Lias and Ropati brought out the brooms again, while Pearson/Ferreira-Felipe also took down the Warriors in two sets.

Swim and Dive

The Long Beach City College swim and & dive teams competed in conference action for the first time since the 2020 season at El Camino College. The women's team has four swimmers ranked in the state top 10.

 

Swimmer Sydney Brouwer is the standout in the conference with three state top 10 rankings. Here are the rest of the top state leaders for the women:

50-freestyle: Rachel Westphal, Long Beach CC, 26.10, 15th in state

1,000-freestyle: Sydney Brouwer, Long Beach, 12:04.01, 1st

1,650-freestyle: Brouwer, Long Beach, 19:50.74, 4th

100-backstroke: Atiya Yuwana, Long Beach, 1:04.75, 9th

200-backstroke: Yuwana, Long Beach, 2:20.86, 7th

200-butterfly: Brouwer, Long Beach, 2:27.87, 3rd

200-IM: Kelly Zavala, Long Beach, 2:14.09, 1st

200 freestyle relay: Long Beach, 1:45.91, 9th

400 freestyle relay: Long Beach, 3:57.25, 6th

800 freestyle relay: Long Beach, 8:52.06, 9th



On the men's side, the Vikings have five swimmers, and two relays ranked in the state's current Top 20 times. Here is the list for the top state leaders for the men:

1,650-freestyle: Mazen Abouelela, Long Beach, 18:15.56, 11th

50-breaststroke: Nicholas Fedotov, Long Beach, 28.75, 11th

50-butterfly: Kai Goeku, Long Beach, 24.69, 7th

200-butterfly: Claudio Reveron, Long Beach, 2:06.67, 9th

800 freestyle relay: Long Beach, 7:25.30, 6th

200 medley relay: Long Beach, 1:40.98, 10th

Men's Volleyball- Men's Volleyball Wins in Three Straight Sets

The No. 2 Long Beach City College men's volleyball team took down No. 7 Santa Monica on Wednesday night in three sets. The Vikings won by the sets of 25-12, 25-21, 25-17. With the conference win, the Vikings advance to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in conference.

Freshman opposite Erik Hernandez led the team with 11 kills, and a .526 kill percentage. Hernandez currently leads the conference with averaging 4.57 kills per set and having a .389 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Sean Nguyen totaled 18 assists and had three digs for the Vikings. Nguyen also sits on the top spot on the conference leaderboard with averaging 9.12 assists per set.
