Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 4/11/2022: Baseball Sweeps LA Harbor, Men’s Volleyball on Winning-Streak

Softball

The Long Beach City College Softball team traveled to LA Harbor College last Wednesday and defeated the Seahawks 15-3.   

The Vikings are currently ranked third in the South Coast Conference with an 11-5 record. They will host Cerritos College this Thursday at 3 p.m.

Baseball- Baseball Takes Down LA Harbor 7-2

The Long Beach City College baseball team took down the LA Harbor Seahawks 7-2 on Thursday afternoon in game two of the three-game conference series. The Vikings won game one on Monday at LA Harbor 8-5. With the win, the Vikings advance to 19-11 overall and 12-5 in the South Coast Conference.

Sophomore pitcher Reed Passmore (4-3) earned the win on the mound by only allowing the Seahawks to two runs on nine hits in eight innings of work. Freshman reliever Mitchell Knight came in the final inning to strike out one and shut down the Seahawks.

The Seahawks were first on the board with a home run, but then Vikings dominated the rest of the game.

Freshman first baseman Matthew Pinal scored the first two runs for the Vikings in the first and third inning from a pair of RBI singles from freshman left fielder Raul Garcia.

Garcia was then scored in by freshman left fielder Bryan Sanders to extend the Vikings' lead 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings continued to bring the offensive momentum with a run from freshman Alex Seguine, and an RBI double from freshman third baseman Evan Vazquez to score in Pinal.

The Seahawks score another run in the top of the eighth, but the Vikings put two more on the board from Sanders and freshman second baseman Kamau Neighbors to finish the game with the 7-2 win.

The Vikings then went on to close the three-game series with a 17-5 win on Saturday against the Seahawks. Long Beach Baseball will be back in action on Wednesday, April 13 against Santa Ana College at 2 p.m. at the Vikings Baseball Field.

Beach Volleyball

The Long Beach City College beach volleyball team defeated Rio Hondo College with a 5-0 sweep and College of the Desert 3-2 last Wednesday afternoon.

The Vikings will be back in the sand on Friday, April 15 against Rio Hondo and Mt. SAC at Mt. San Antonio College starting at 10 a.m.

Men's Volleyball

The No. 2 men's volleyball team continues their reign as they recently swept Santa Monica College 3-0 to extend their winning-streak to six games.

With the win, the Vikings remain in second place in the state rankings and are 15-2 overall and 10-1 in the Western State Conference.

The Vikings will host No. 4 El Camino this Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Building Q Gym for their final meetup before postseason.

Track & Field

The men and women's track and field team competed in two events this past week. At the SoCal Multi Championships, freshmen Natalie Mejia and Tyrone Jones finished 11th (Mejia) and 8th (Jones). Mejia completed in seven events (100 hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200 meters, Long Jump, Javelin and 800 meters) while Jones completed 10 events (100 meters, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400 meters, 110 hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, and 1500 meters) in the two-day championship.

Jones earned a personal best of combined point total of 4783, while Mejia also earned a personal best combined point total of 3279. Jones' top individual finishes came in the Long Jump 6.41m (21'0.5"), High Jump 1.73m (5'8"), and Javelin 39.00m (127'11"). Mejia's top finishes came in the High Jump 1.47m (4'9.75") Long Jump 4.79 (15'8.75") and 800m (2:24.55). Although this concludes their participation in the multis this season, both athletes are set to continue with these top events going into the upcoming South Coast Conference and SoCal Regional Championships.

Here are some highlights from the Vaquero Invitational from this past weekend.

Men's highlights (All marks are new personal best):

  • ​Azjani McGill takes 1st in the 200 meters with a SoCal Auto Qualifying and State A Qualifying time 21.22. He also took 2nd in the 100 meters with a State 'A' Qualifying time 10.61.
  • Wesley Easter takes 1st in the Long Jump with a jump of 6.83m 22'5". He also took 2nd in the Triple jump with a State 'A' qualifying jump of 13.98m 45'11".​​
  • Kai Ruth takes 4th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.98. He also took 7th in the Long Jump with a jump of 21'6".
  • Jordan Ikeda takes 5th in the Long Jump with a jump 6.65m 21'10".

Women's highlights:

  • Destinee Reid takes 2nd overall in the 100m with a season best time of 12.68.
  • Radiance Lindsey takes 2nd overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.54.
  • Casey Davis takes 2nd overall in the Shot Put with a throw of 11.00m (36'1")
  • Women's 4x100 (Desiree Hansford, Destinee Reid, Taj Grant, Radiance Lindsey) takes 4th overall with a time of 50.81.
  • Serenity Lindemans takes 5th overall in the Javelin with a throw of 24.86 (81'7")
  • Taryn Benton takes 6th overall in the Long Jump with a personal best jump of 4.89m (16'1")
  • Hannah Coronado takes 7th overall in the pole vault with a personal best jump of 2.13m (7'0")​

Golf Tournament- Register NOW!


Summer Swim Registration is Now Open!

Summer time is rapidly approaching, so start planning for summer with the 2022 Long Beach City College Summer Swim Program that will be offered June through August at the new Kinesiology Labs and Aquatics Complex. This program will include learning to swim, stroke instructions, perfecting mechanics, and learning to play water polo.

The summer swim program ranges starts at age 4 that include various swimming activities for differing levels of experience. The program is run by the LBCC Aquatics assistant coach Bradley Adamson. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels available at all times. It is not necessary to sign up swimmers in specific levels. All swimmers will be assessed in the first class session.

A brand new water polo session is being offered this summer for the first time in every week from 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. You must be able to swim unassisted to register for water polo.

This program includes seven sessions that begins on June 27th. Registration is weekly and space is limited.
