Vikings Athletic Week in Review- 4/18/2022: Men’s Volleyball Advances to State Championship Semifinals

Softball- No. 7 Softball Takes Down No. 6 Cerritos 6-2

The No. 7 Long Beach City College softball team defeated the No. 6 Cerritos College Falcons 6-2 on Thursday evening to seal the conference series victory. With the win, the Vikings hold on to second place in the South Coast Conference with a 13-5 record.

Sophomore pitcher Daisy Torres (18-8) was phenomenal in the circle as she only allowed the Falcons to two runs on six hits, while striking down four in seven solid innings of work.

The Falcons were first on the board with two runs in the first inning to lead the Vikings 2-0.

Freshman designated player Gladys Garcia shined at the plate for the Vikings as she smashed a double to right field to score in freshman pinch runner Jasmine Delgado.

Then in the sixth inning with sophomore third baseman Ileana Rivera and sophomore short stop Jade Wittman on first and second, and Garcia knocked another one out of the ballpark over the left field fence to raise the Vikings over the Falcons 4-2.

The Vikings continued the rally with RBI singles from freshman center fielder Alia Marquez and freshman right fielder Kirstin Sanchez to bring the Vikings up to six runs and finish the game with the 6-2 win over the Falcons.

Baseball- Vazquez Celebrates Completes Game Win With 8-1 Victory Over LA Mission

The No. 18 Long Beach City College Baseball team defeated the LA Mission College Eagles 8-1 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings advance to 22-12 overall.

Freshman pitcher Evan Vazquez (5-3) had a complete game as he only allowed one run on five hits, while striking out four for the entirety of the game.

The Vikings opened the game with a two RBI triple from freshman designated hitter Raul Garcia, then Garcia scored on an Eagle wild pitch to lead LA Mission 3-0.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles scored off a sacrifice fly to close in on the Vikings 3-1.

The in the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings scored three runs from freshman shortstop Alex Seguine, freshman first baseman Matthew Pinal, and freshman center fielder Bryan Sanders.

Seguine was near perfect at the dish, as he went four-for-five and tallied three runs.

Freshman left fielder Tyler Bermundo scored the Vikings' seventh run with a walk to the plate, and then Seguine finished the reign over LA Mission with a run from a sacrifice fly to finalize the 8-1 win.

The Long Beach City College Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday, April 19 against East Los Angeles College at 2:30 p.m.

Beach Volleyball

The Long Beach City College beach volleyball team defeated Rio Hondo College with a 5-0 sweep, but then fell to Mt.SAC 3-2 last Friday.

The Vikings will be back in the sand on Friday, April 22 at El Camino College starting at 10 a.m.

Men's Volleyball- No. 1 Vikings Advance to CCCAA State Championship Semifinals

The No. 1 men's volleyball team defeated the San Diego Mesa College Olympians last Friday evening in the Building Q Gym with a 3-0 sweep to advance to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship Semifinals.

The Vikings were very consistent against the Olympians and won by the sets of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-12.

Freshman outside hitter Julian Zavala led the team with 11 kills and had two service aces. Freshman setter Sean Nguyen was the catalyst behind the ball as he totaled 14 assists for the Vikings and sophomore libero Kyler Tufuga tallied 11 digs for the Vikings.

The Vikings will go on to face No. 4 El Camino this Thursday, April 21 at El Camino at 7 p.m. in the CCCAA State Championship Semifinals.

Summer Swim Registration is Now Open!

Summer time is rapidly approaching, so start planning for summer with the 2022 Long Beach City College Summer Swim Program that will be offered June through August at the new Kinesiology Labs and Aquatics Complex. This program will include learning to swim, stroke instructions, perfecting mechanics, and learning to play water polo.

The summer swim program ranges starts at age 4-15 that include various swimming activities for differing levels of experience. The program is run by the LBCC Aquatics assistant coach Bradley Adamson. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels available at all times. It is not necessary to sign up swimmers in specific levels. All swimmers will be assessed in the first class session.

A brand new water polo session is being offered this summer for the first time in every week from 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. You must be able to swim unassisted to register for water polo.

This program includes seven sessions that begins on June 27th. Registration is weekly and space is limited.
