Passing of Track & Field Assistant Throws Coach, John McFadyen

With a heavy heart, the Long Beach City College athletics department announces the passing of Assistant Track & Field Throwing Coach, John McFadyen.

"I am deeply saddened with a loss of a friend and close colleague these past two years," said Director of Track & Field Marcus Carroll. "Coach McFayden was a major factor and influence to the development of our student-athletes. His dedication and commitment to this program was undeniable. He was here every day early and often for these student-athletes. He gave his life to coaching and for that, I am grateful for his service!"

Coach McFadyen played football and threw the shot put on the LBCC 1981 State Champion Track and Field team. McFadyen graduated from St. Anthony High School, where he also coached.

Coach McFadyen has led the Viking Throwers to the SoCal Regional Finals and the State Championships for the past five years, most recently 2022 Shot Put State Champion Casey Davis.

"John's unwavering dedication, expertise, and passion for coaching propelled our athletes to new heights," said Athletics Director Kal Stewart. "He was not only a coach but also a mentor and a friend to those he worked with. His presence will be sorely missed, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all."

The family welcomes you in joining to say our last goodbyes to Coach McFadyen. His memorial services will be held on Wednesday, July 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Cyprian's Catholic Church. Reception to follow after service.
