Team USA Women’s Water Polo Wins Gold at 2024 World Championships

The USA Women's National Team clinched the gold medal at the 2024 World Aquatics World Championships after a thrilling 8-7 victory against Hungary. Rachel Fattal showcased her scoring prowess with three goals, supported by Maggie Steffens who contributed two goals to the win. Ashleigh Johnson's stellar performance in goal, with a total of 12 saves, earned her the title of top goalkeeper of the tournament. This triumph marks the eighth world championship title in the program's history, solidifying its status as the most successful program in men's or women's water polo globally. The team adds this victory to its impressive list of world championship titles, which includes wins in 2003, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022.

"The USA Women's National Water Polo team has been training at Long Beach City College over the past year and has used the KLAC facilities to host multiple International tournaments," said Director of Aquatics, Bradley Adamson. "Our very own, Chris Oeding (LBCC Aquatics Head Coach of 20+ years), assists on the National team. This most recent World Title bodes well for some strong momentum leading into Paris 2024 this Summer. We all celebrate Team USA's achievements at LBCC and will continue to support them for their continued success on the World Stage!"

Oeding has been with the women's national team since Spring of 2013. He has helped lead Team USA to Gold in the 2016 and 2021 Olympics. He also is a two-time Olympian and captain of the U.S. Olympic Men's Water Polo Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
