Following a game in which the Long Beach City College football team routed the Pasadena City College Lancers by a score of 41-14, the Vikings climb to the top of the JC Athletic Bureau's poll of California Community College football coaches.
After receiving 242 total points in the voting, Long Beach is marked as the top-dog following a 41-point outburst and a 1-0 start to the season. Freshman quarterback Jake Meier (La Harba, CA) was dominant through the air after going 22-for-39 with 312 yards and five touchdowns. Additionally, the freshman phenome scrambled for 27 yards on four carries.
The aerial attack deems potent as five different wide receivers hauled in touchdown passes in the victory. Freshman wider receiver Cedric Byrd (Los Angeles, CA) led the core with four catches for 74 yards, while freshman wide receiver Marcus Moore (Los Angeles, CA) followed shortly behind with three snags for 67 yards.
Freshman running back Roderick Ashford Jr. (Long Beach, CA) and sophomore running back Jason Floyd (Compton, CA) handled the duties in the backfield by rushing for a combined 116 yards on the ground off 16 carries.
The defense that halted the Lancers to just 14 points was led by freshman defensive lineman Abedayo Soremekum (Long Beach, CA) led the squad with six tackles including one for a loss of two yards.
The Vikings will be challenged by the No. 3 Saddleback College Gauchos on Saturday, September 10 in a rematch of the SoCal Regional Championship contest. The remaining season schedule is as follows:
