Football’s Matt Mengel Signs With the Canadian Football League

Long Beach City College football athlete Matt Mengel recently signed at the professional level with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes.

The CFL announced that Mengel (six-foot-two, 210 pounds) was a member of the Conquerors of the Spring Football League last fall, helping the team win the championship as he kicked a 55-yard field goal in the win. The Harbor City, CA native played collegiately with the UCLA Bruins. In two seasons, the 27-year-old kicker maintained a 40.1-yard average on punts, forcing opponents to start their offensive drives inside their 20-yard line 35 times on 113 punts.

Prior playing for the Bruins, Mengel was a kicker/punter for the Vikings in 2013, where he totaled 57 points as a kicker and totaled 1592 yards as a punter.

"We are not surprised but are very proud that Matt's talent is being recognized, he has incredible leg talent and, unlike most kickers, he handles all duties, punt, kickoff and PAT/field goals, all he needed was an opportunity," said Head Coach Brett Peabody. "The best is yet to come for Matt Mengel."

The Alouettes are led by Head Coach Khari Jones are slated to start their 2021 season this summer.
