Men’s Basketball: Vikings snap losing streak with 101-73 win over Trade Tech

The Long Beach City College men's basketball team scored a season-high 101 points and snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 101-73 win over visiting Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Friday at the LBCC Hall of Champions Gym.

It was Long Beach's first South Coast Conference win of the season as well as its first home win in four tries.

Five different Vikings scored in double-figures in the rout with freshman guard Carlos Sanchez (pictured) leading the way with a game-high 21 points. Sanchez nailed four three-pointers and nearly had more but had his foot touching the line on two other deep shots.

Sophomore forward Tyler Tuliau posted a near triple-double with 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Sophomore guard Ashton Edwards chipped in with 18 points, nine assists, and six rebounds while freshman guard Rueben Strickland added 17 points and eight rebounds. And from the bench, sophomore forward Austin Jancan posted 14 points and five rebounds.

Long Beach trailed for the majority of the first half and was down 26-22 at the 3:44 mark before putting together a big 14-2 run to go ahead 36-28 with 40 seconds left in the half. During the scoring streak, Edwards sank a pair of three-pointers and Jancan added four points.

The momentum carried over into the second and the Vikings put together an 11-0 run to take a commanding 59-38 lead with 13:23 to go.

A layup by Sanchez gave the Vikings its biggest lead of the game (30 points) at 75-45 with 9:03 remaining and freshman Jacob Cheek's three-pointer with 24 seconds left in the game broke the century mark.

The loss dropped LA Trade Tech to 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the SCC. Jordan Watson led the Beavers with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Long Beach (6-12, 1-3 SCC) returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 23) when it travels to El Camino College for a 6 p.m. conference game.
