Sonoma State Head Coach Zooms with Men's Soccer

Sonoma State University Men's Soccer Head Coach Marcus Zeimer held a zoom meeting with the men's soccer team recently. Coach Zeimer has been the head coach at Sonoma for the past 30 years and  has won a national title, numerous conference and conference tournament titles, and been named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. He spoke to team about the differences between Northern California and Southern California from the college soccer and lifestyle aspect, as well as the differences between Division I, Division II, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the United Soccer League, and Major League Soccer.

In addition, he talked about how a player can market himself to university coaches and how he looks for the right fit himself for his team. Lastly, he did a question and answer sessions with the students.

Here are a few takeaways from the Vikings that they learned from the interview with Coach Zeimer.

"I like how he went to games sometimes as a fan, but also like a student trying to learn something from watching team play" (Alejandro Cabello)

"It was important to hear that if you do not take care of your academics, you cannot even think about playing at the University level. You need to work hard both in the classroom and on the field." (William Cabello)

"When you are moving up to the next level, make sure to look at the team's style of playing to see if which ones match how you play." (Daniel Frausto)

"It was interesting to hear about the differences between soccer and lifestyle in Northern California compared to Southern California." (Jack Schaaf)

"Coach Zeimer talked about putting precision into your training and making sure that you focus on the important parts of training and that you get the best out of your training." (Odie Tom)

Long Beach City College Head Coach Cameron Beaulac and Coach Zeimer have been friends for over 25 years. One of Beaulac's former players, Ethan Miller-Bazemore, who made a surprise visit on the Zoom, went to Sonoma State and is in their athletic Hall of Fame. 2020 LBCC men's soccer graduate Miles Hodgson received a scholarship to Sonoma State and will be playing once the team is allowed to get back together.

Coach Beaulac and the entire program would like to thank Coach Zeimer for taking the time to talk to the students. His knowledge and experience with the collegiate game is something that all the young men were able to benefit from.
