Women’s Soccer: Close game turns into 4-0 loss to No. 1 Cerritos

The Long Beach City College women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 South Coast Conference loss to visiting Cerritos College on Friday at LBCC. The loss snapped the Vikings' seven-game winning streak and dropped their record to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCC.

The game was much closer than the lopsided final score would indicate as the Vikings and the No. 1 nationally-ranked Falcons (10-0, 4-0 SCC) held each other scoreless all the way until the 76th minute.

Behind the excellent effort of LBCC goalkeeper Jeanette DeAnda, the Vikings kept Cerritos off the scoreboard in the first half. DeAnda's biggest stop of the game came in the 40th minute when she denied the Falcons' Lauren Nanez on a penalty kick.

DeAnda closed the game with seven saves and left the contest after allowing a pair of late Cerritos goals.

Nanez got her revenge after unloading a shot from 30 yards out to beat DeAnda and put Cerritos up 1-0 in the 76th minute. Cerritos broke the game open with a goal by Monica Ramirez in the 79th minute and put the game out of reach after a goal by Martha Rodriguez just one minute later. Gabriela Zamarripa closed out the contest with her goal in the 89th minute.

LBCC had a goal overturned in the 18th minute. After a shot by sophomore Denise Martinez was knocked down in front of the net, the ball somehow found its way into the goal, but the Vikings were ruled offside on the play.

Long Beach managed just three shots in the contest while the Falcons were relentless with 20 shots.

Long Beach returns to action on Tuesday (Oct 11) when they travel to face L.A. Harbor in a 4:15 pm conference game.
